The Best Hot Hatch Ever

The fact it wasn't just that it easier to drive fast that made it more fun for me but the fact that it was easy enough to hang the arse out round roundabouts without crashing and dying :) It was just very predictable and you could feel exactly what it was going to do, the 205 always felt more like it was going to do what it wanted to do. Even the basic 1.3 309 I borrowed from a mate for a bit was great fun.

In fact this thread has made me want one again, if only for a little while.

The rumours of uncontrollable LOOS in the 205 GTI are GREATLY exaggerated, and are usually peddled by those who cannot drive. Do something stupid (like lift off mid corner to correct your line at 60MPH odd, like I did) and you'll spin. Don't drive like a muppet and you'll be just fine.

I'm torn between the 205 GTI 1.6 and the 309 GTI.
Both are excellent, excellent machines.... the extra rawness of the 205 means I think I'll stick with that.

There's a tendancy to think all 80s hot hatches will feel similar or the same. Go and drive a Mk2 Golf GTI, followed by a 205 GTI, followed by a MG Maestro for example. The differences are absolutely huge!

the nissan almera vzr n1 is most proberly my favourite hatch ever. it was a direct competitor to the ek9 type-r and then some. at one point it had the highest n/a bhp per litre in the world for a production car.

as far as ukdm hatches go the 205 gti is my favourite oldskool hatch followed by the ep3 civic for the modern era.

Blimey, that Almera/Pulsar is awesome. Why is it that I've never heard of/seen it before? It actually looks like a viable alternative to the EK9, and has what, 197BHP from an N/A 1.6.

That's bonkers.

I think the only thing going against it is the fact it still looks like a grandad mobile. Damn good sleeper though!

Clio v6.

Just seems awesome to have such a big engine in such a small car and I love those air vents on the side. it is like a supercar but a clio.

One of my mates rolled his after having it for a couple of years coming off the A627M at the Rochdale end. Probably doing about 70ish round the bend at the end and lifted off, the back end stepped out, hit a curb and rolled down the road a few times. He's hardly the greatest driver, just normal, but was used to the car and what it could do annd still had a big accident which could have killed him (he crawled out unharmed btw). I'd rather have something that's a bit more forgiving to drive on the road.

This thread appears to be using the definition 'Is fast and a hatch' for hot hatch - the Z4 3.0Si perfectly fits this,

Infact actually, Z4 M.

So what, they are still not "hot hatches", you’re just being obtuse. ;)

What were people talking about, ah yes “hot hatches”. :D

Its a hatchback and its hot! It's as much of a hot hatch as a Nissan Pulsar or a Golf R32 ;)

R32 is a hot hatch though really, just because it has AWD, it is still a hatch and most definitely hot.

I wouldn't include it in this thread though, same as the S3, maybe because it is too expensive? but still technically more a hot hatch than a 2 seater with a tiny boot. and these old "hot hatches" cost a lot anyway. the price of a Clio V6 is crazy, could almost get a current model S3!

On that basis I'm changing my vote to the Monaro VXR. :D

Rover Metro GTi ? ;)

In all seriousness I regard the hot hatches to be small, cheap and faster than the norm. things like the Alfa 147 GTA, Focus ST, Astra VXR I think of as missing the point by being over the top. Where as your Polo GTi, 106 GTi, Clios etc all fit.

For me it would probably be a toss up between the Civic Type R EP3 or the Clio 182 Trophy!
