My Mac Pro had Video glitches & freezing picture also mentioned loud PSU

Took it into Apple on Sunday at 11:00am

they done 24 hour Stress testing

Got a call on Tuesday about 18:00 saying it was ready.

They have replaced the HD4870 with a new one

they replaced the PSU with a new one

They Replaced the whole Case (they said it vibrated to much)

all in all im happy, it was only 5 months old after all.

however the cost without warrenty would have been awful

The Bill:
4870 - £279
PSU - £158
CASE - £124
Labour - £76
Total - £639

if you buy a Mac Pro Get Warrenty this is a warning to you all :D

All hail apple care :D

Mate took his late 07 mbp to the apple store after the 8600gt died in it and the amount of faults the found was almost funny (dead speakers, dvd drive, sound output ports and most logic boards) total bill was £870 i think. Apple care took care of it though :D

Going to remind him to take it back again though as he got the green vertical line thing and only has 6 months left to sort it....

£279 for a 4870 and £158 for a PSU.... I am willing to bet its no 1000W Corsair either. Seem ridiculously expensive to me!

It's a 1200W 80% (Or maybe 85%+) efficient beast of a PSU, either way it's no standard off the shelf stuff like OcUK sells. Remember this isn't just a desktop, it's a workstation and hence it's built like one.

But im surprised the case is so cheap

*Strokes HE 3 year warranty* My Mac Pro is in for work whilst im at home, should have perfect bluetooth when I get it back.

639 quid for a 5 month old machine thats disgusting

He didn't pay, it was covered by the warranty.

So what's the problem?

Exactly what I was thinking!

Haven't seen the inside of a Mac Pro have you?

We're not talking about intel heatsinks and corsair power supplies. It's all custom, so you'd expect it to be pricier.

Only suprising cost was the gfx card tbh :o

To get my screen replaced (Yellow Tint, But is still not fixed!!!) and the full Logic Board replaced in my 4 Month old Core i5 iMac it would have just being over £800!

I was shocked! Thank god I have Apple Care!

Extended warranties are a con either from Apple or any of the other people who foist them onto the naive.

Very often they are but Applecare really isn't. It cost me £60 for an extra two years Applecare on my Mac Pro and when it was about 18 months old it needed a new PSU and airport card, total cost around £200 plus labour.

How does that work out a con and make me naive?

It depends how you look at things and your attitude to risk.

Personally I never insure against stuff I could afford to replace. That's all AppleCare is - insurance against failures in years 2 to 3.

It's a balance of cost against risk. When you get student discount for example taking it to 60 quid or whatever then I'd probably get it anyways. When it's 200+ beer tokens, then it'd come under my idea of not insuring what I can afford to replace.

I'd be ****ed if my MBP went bang at Warranty+1 month however I could replace it. Over the lifetime of my life in tech I'll save by not insuring.

For big value items such as cars/houses etc. I couldn't afford to replace to I'd insure.

My MacBook Pro has now had £1000+ of repairs.

My MacBook Air has had £1200 of repairs.

Without Applecare, I still wouldn't've paid as I would have sued them silly.

i only insure my Macs & my Camera equipment as they are expensive.

MY Mac Pro to replace would be £3,649.99 incl. VAT would you like to replace that without warranty?

i wouldn't. :)

I know what you mean but if you consider how much you spend out on insuring these things on how many of them you own there's going to be a cross over point.

I don't insure laptops, phones etc. cos I can afford to replace should I need to. Bigger stuff I do insure against.

It's all a judgment call really.

I forgot to buy the extended warranty for my Mac Pro! (said no at the time and then forgot...), been quoted 600 pounds for possible fix (motherboard replacement and man hours...)

I don't bother to insure them, as I sell them within the first 3 years anyway :p
