Hi guys,

Not sure if this should belong in the cases section or the Overclocking and Cooling section, but I will give a go here first.

Up until now, all my builds have been prebuilds from OCUK, however I need to upgrade my graphics card, and the Antec 902 isnt going to let me shoehorn the card I want in there, so going to change the case as well.

Just wondering about fan set up for the 800D - I'm going to be going with air cooling - the 800D comes with 3 onboard fans - are they of sufficient quality or if I'm going to be pushing a 920 to 4-4.2 am I going to need to replace those?

It also has space for another 4 fans, I'm figuring if I'm going to be doing a heavy OC that I'm going to need to fill those out too - what would you recommend? I'm not too fussed about noise, I seem to filter out fan noise to the point that its not really there so I'm just looking for performance.

And one final question, I currently use the Noctua NH-U12P cooler on the CPU - I gather that there are now much better air coolers out there - does anybody have a recommendation for me?

Thanks for all the help.

The Corsair 800D is more of a water cooling case. A much cheaper alternative si the ANtec 1200. It is great for air cooling. It has 3 intake fans at front, 2 out take at the back and 1 big out take on the top.

A better air cooler would be the Noctua NH-D14.

Yeah, I know the 800D is primarily used as a WC case, I cant really go for another Antec case. Reason being... and try not to laugh - we have two cats that like to come in my computer room, on the top of the Antec case there are loads of little nooks and crannys that love to attract dust and cat hair and various other junk that make the case look awful - and they're really hard to clean properly. I love the fact that 800D is a giant flat surface that will just wipe down.

I've also read that trying to fit a 5970 into an 1200 is going to be tight, where as with the Corsair you have room to burn.

Antec do make cases with flat tops. But the 800D is a good case. Also consider the 700D - makes do without a couple of features and saves £20.

I've also looked at the Notcua NH-D14 - does seem like the king of air coolers at the moment, but unfortunately I have OCZ Reaper RAM and I would have absolute no chance of fitting it. Replacing the RAM is a little bit out of budget at the moment - next best option?

Which motherboard are you using, i have ocz reaper installed and use a thermalright ultra extreme heatsink, my board is an asus p6t deluxe v2 x58 board, previous to this i used the same TRUE on an s775 asus p5q deluxe also with reaper ram, no problems with ram clearance.

Its a Biostar T-Power X58, the Noctua NH-U12 already sits over one of the six RAM slots, looking at the measurements it looks the NH-14 would clear about 3 of them.

This is mine with the TRUE and reaper.

Still have room if i go to 12gb.

I've got an 800D for air cooling, I spent quite some time on deciding the fan setup for it.

I've got three Apache Blacks in the top, the rear is an exhaust, the front two intakes. I've added a Scythe Kama bay and put another Apache as an intake in there.

All three 140 mm fans have been replaced with Xigamatech's and there is another Apache on the bottom sucking air in under the Xigamatech.

I've spent some time with tape, string and bits of paper seeing how the airflow worked.

It sounds an odd setup but I'd seen it as a recommendation on another forum by a Corsair rep.

I've only got the build together last night but had my i7930 @4.2 bundle together with a GTX295 sitting at 36idle (cpu temp) and the case temps were low too.

This was with a Scythe Server fan controller and many of the fans were running at either 700 or 900rpm ready to ramp up when it gets warmer in there.

Obviously not a full test so far but it seems to be working well.

Cheers for all the input guys, greatly appreciated.

Fred can you let me know how your system beds in after a few more days as I'm pretty sure I'm going to go ahead with your fan setup.

Rids, as requested, reporting back.

This set up is working well, running Intel burn test I'm getting between 67-75 across the cores. Its running prime at the moment and is a little lower.

Temps inside the case are 25 and I've got a GTX295, 2 SSD's and 2 raptors in there too.

Its also very quiet!

So far can't understand why people say this is only for air cooling!
Ok I've made some small mods but I've not cut any metal to do them.

Pretty pleased to be honest.

sounds great fred. would you mind taking some pics of the insides showing what you've done? I, and im sure others who would aircool in an 800d, would be very intrested!

You mean water cooling... :p

Thanks for sharing your experience on the 800D, it's always interesting to hear from the users themselves, rather than reviewing websites.
