Audi A4 1.8T

I notice that the seatbelt is rather cleverly hiding the driver's seat bolster. I don't think it's coincidence..

good pick up there bet its marked/worn out. It took me ages when i was looking for a car to find one with an unmarked side bolster its aways the 1st to go if you dont leather feed etc.

My mum had one of those it was a y reg 1.8t with full leather Bose stereo ya da ya da but I must say out of all of our rep mobiles it was terrible on the reliablity side of things intact but my sent a letter to audi with a full page of things that had gone wrong in the first 2 years it literally filled the page of a4 with bullet points

that aside we did have perhaps the most shoddy dealership ever and I did like the car I just prefer the 3 series a c class that came after it we had the previous a4 also with the same engine and that was fine I think in reality we had a Friday afternoon a4 that was just shocking in every way

Have you looked into a MK1 Octavia vRS? Not an Audi badge by any means, but the same engine and excellent value for money - example. :)

Good suggestion. I have looked at a few Octavia vRS online and I do like the look of them- visually and specification wise. So it is an option. The problem is there not many around within 50 miles of my location, and the ones I have seen so far have all been high mileage or the wrong colour :D

I hope it is not hiding anything but I guess I'll find out when I go to view it.

Well I certainly hope they aren't all as bad as that sounds!

Please do say exactly what these catrastrophic mechanical failures in the first 2 years of ownership were were......please, I really am on tenterhooks to find out what was on the "Page of A4" sent to Audi UK that supposedly makes this the "A4 terrible for reliability".

Please list the fault with sufficient detail.

to be honest if you were dead set on saloon VW 1.8T goodness, I'd have a look at a Passat, get a newer one for your money I would have thought.

Did Eliot do a ninja edit, or did you just add in "catrastrophic (sic) mechanical failures" in a deeply sad attempt to make it sound like he did say that?

I honestly do not think a 9 year old A4 turbo is the answer to a 'what reliable hassle free car?' question.

I agree, so it is just as well that I have not asked that question...Although I would obviously love for my next car to be reliable and hassle free.

Lol no I did not ninja edit and I will quiz mum about the letter if she still has a seeing as it was 8 years ago
the major one I remember bearing in mind I was about 12 was that the car cut out at 70 in the right hand lane and would barely turn would not start again or operate properly at all
I don't know why you wouldn't believe me after all why would i lie but I'll ask mum for a brief list of stuff anyway
edit;
just asked her she doesn't remember much but apparently it never started the first time but always the second
the seat kept breaking inside and causing and annoying rattle
the car lied about fuel and would tell you you gmhad half a tank when you run out of petrol
the door handle kept falling off
there was loads more but she can't remember
again I think we just had a dog tbh

This isn't a personal dig at you for not wanting the Seat or Skoda, however are you implying you want a non-reliable and hassle-ful car?

Unfortunately I had to view the car a little later than planned and someone had place a deposit on it 5 minutes before I arrived. I still had a good look around and the interior was in immaculate condition including the bolster obscured by the seat belt in the photo.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I'm not even particularly looking for a 1.8T. It is just that most of the A4's I have liked the look of have had this engine. Ideally I wanted a 2.0 FSI but I'm finding it quite hard to find a good one within my budget.

The answer to your question is clearly in my post which you just quoted. The point I was making is that reliability it is not the SOLE requirement for my next car which [TW]Fox seemed to imply.

Also, I stated earlier in the thread that I was actively looking at the Skoda Octavia vRS.

Some people are happy to accept that a car is going to cost them money in repairs and additional running costs over and above another car, and may at somes be a bit of a faff to own.

Sometimes, people feel this disadvantage is outweighed by other advantages. I am one of these people, for example.

Just needed to make sure the OP was as well, because if he just wants 'some posh car' he's probably going to get very sick of it very quick, if he genuinelly likes the A4 and is prepared to spend a bit less on his car in order to spend a bit more running it, its a sensible option.

It's not that I disbelieve you, its just that a lot of stories can turn into urban myths over the years and get exaggerated with each retelling, so I'm just checking.

From what you've said, it sounds like a ignition/fueling problem, a rattle from one of the seats and a loose door handle.

The ignition/fueling problem could be irritating to resolve under warranty especially if you have a poor local dealer, but apart from that I don't think there's enough to tar the A4 with the tag of incredibly unreliable car.

As you've pointed out already, it just sounds like bad luck and got a lemon.

I have done 70k in my A4 and not spent any money on it apart from the rear wiper motor as it is a known issue, very reliable cars in my opinion and very well built.
Oh and my car had 130k on it when I bought it, guess I just got lucky.
Badge snobbery or not, you cant compare a Seat with an Audi the interier finish is so much better.
Not that up on the 1.8T but pretty sure coil packs are failiures to look out for.
Cambelt is take the whole front off Jobby, I can do it myself but can be expensive to do, so account for that.

Also, the front wiper assembly is prone to seizing up and then taking out the wiper motor.
In the 2 years I owned mine, the wiper motor assembly was the only thing that went wrong. I managed to change that myself and because I spotted it early, the motor was fine.
It cost me £58 from Audi for the assembly, the motor would have been a further £110.
