Hi Guys,

Ok this is what my folding rigs are taking from the wall... TOTAL (without monitors on)...

1020 watts total for the following:

i7 920, 2 x 275
i5 750, 1 x 8800
Q6600, 1 x 8800

none of them are overclocked

Can anyone work out who much this is going to cost me per month, I'm with EDF at the moment...

Also thought that you might be interested to find out as well..

You need to find out the pence per kwh that you are being charged then set your power meter to show you your kwh used. You might need to set it to 0 then wait for a day/week/month to be able to get a reliable measurement you can use to work out the cost. Also be aware you may be charged one rate during the day and another one at night. You might have a leaflet from EDF which details the charges.

My one rig drawing 300ish watts cost me about £23 a month.

You might not want to do this! I calculated my folding costs once before, and I have since been trying to forget what I saw! I now live in ignorance and blame my electricity bills on people leaving the lights on and making too many cups of tea. :p

edit: on a more serious note, definitely check what tariff you are on, I've saved quite a bit by changing to an npower web based duel fuel tariff. Check money supermarket for the best in your area.

It will depend on your tarrif's kWhr rate, and as verbal has said it can vary from day to day, time of day, or even £x for the first so many units and £z after that.
AFAIK rates currently vary from between about 9p and 15p per kWhr.

A kWhr is the amount energy that would be used if a 1kW device was left on for one hour. It is used as it is a easier unit to use for billing people compared to the Joule (1kWhr = 3,600,000 Joules) - joe public would worry with all those zeros!

So given you are pulling 1020W from the wall, call it 1kW for simplicity, hence you are using 1kWhr per hour (yes that is ..hours per hour) so that is 9-15p per hour of folding. This adds up to ~£790 to ~£1300 a year! not a small sum.

Glad my leccy is free... at the moment...

My one rig drawing 300ish watts cost me about £23 a month.

This would put his average rate at ~10.6p per kWhr
300W = 0.3kWhr per hour = 7.2kWhr per day = ~216kWhr per month, divide £23 by this and you get 0.106...£/kWhr

Heh, good work. I pay 11p/kwh. Guess my PC averages just under the 300w. Probably usually look at the meter with the monitor switched on.

Yikes! Yeah, it will definitely be a chunk of change. The calculations above seem about right.

I think I've said this before as well but I'm pretty sure the electricity companies flag sudden spikes in leccy usage with the police as it's a warning sign that a particular address is growing "herbs" in the spare room. So watch out for that pizza van outside as well! :p

Scary thoughts and not ones I need.

2 x 8800GT overclocked
1 x 8800GS overclocked
1 x 9600GT overclocked
1 x Q6600 overclocked

All 24/7.

hmm.... I did see an ice cream truck last night that sped off when I went to get an ice cream....

as you posted this, I decided to measure my power draw of my main rigs. Running seti at home mind you, but:
1060 W:
1x Q6600 @ 2.7 GHz, XFX 260 Black edition (no idea speeds)
1x Q6600 @ 2.6 GHz, 8600
1x i7 920 @ 2.6 GHz, BFG 285 and a Palit GTS 250 Green edition
1x Q9400S @ 2.66 GHz, on board zotac 9300

I think that 'S' processor and the green edition allow me to squeeze more in there than you, so I don't feel so bad :p

Being a student's the key.
My rent last term included bills, which was nice, and now I'm back in semi-student accommodation this term which the Medical School are very kindly not only paying the bills for, but also paying the rent :D
*hugs free accommodation* :p

Also, I only have one folding machine, it's just slightly more epic than most, if not on the same level as wee beastie and the like, and somewhat under-the-weather atm. But it pleases me that you assumed I had more than one! ;)

Me too - i'm accomadated by my college for at least 3 years of my degree. I pay a fixed "heat and light" charge once a term - i happen to use this to my advantage and get ~500W on pc 24/7 + heating, lighting, fridge and normal electric use.

Essentially its free as i use far, far more than i pay for. Then again those students running netbooks are probably loosing out, so i guess 'free' depends on your point of view!

Oh and I also only have one folding machine! gtx295 + q9450

The important principle with 'free' leccy is that you can use as much as you want and your bill doesn't go up :)
I have no power meter to measure with but by my estimations, my PC uses:
  • [email protected] - 210W
  • 8800GT+9800GT - 250W total
  • 9600GT - 100W
  • 6 HDDs - ~45W?
  • 20% PSU inefficiencies - ~130W
  • Total - ~750W, including random bits and bobs like mobo

Unfortunately, that's more than some electric heaters :p
I'm sure lots of people have my problem of the room getting too hot as a result! Fortunately I'm on the third floor this term so my window can be open pretty much 24/7, which helps a bit :)
