O2 to revamp packages?

http://forum.adslhelper.co.uk/topic...and-packages-roll-out-traffic-shaping-on-llu/

Well word has it that O2 are looking at revamping their Broadband Packages as they've recently been sending out email asking select customers (registered on their 'Join In O2' site) to fill in a survey asking for customer opinions on the new packages.

Initial viewing seems to show that O2 are, at least, are considoring limiting bandwidth usage on one of the packages, as well as implementing traffic shaping on them all. Here's some info on the 'new' packages:

The Basics - The great value one

For single user or single device households - one computer or device online at a time.

Ideal package if general web browsing is most of what you want to do online - shopping, emails, Facebook, decent iPlayer & YouTube, etc

Download limit of 20gb per month.

Speed: Upto 20Mb, subject to both the speed your line can handle. Certain traffic managed, depending on package.

The All Rounder - The balanced one

Multi User households - more than one person, computer or device online at a time

Great for families that need multiple access to the web to catch up with emails, Facebook, shopping

Good online streaming experience with iPlayer

Better connected experience: premium wireless router (wireless 'N' technology for better wireless range/less chance of drop outs)

Unlimited monthly downloads

Speed: Up to 20Mb, subject to both the speed your line can handle and the package you pick. Certain traffic managed, depending on package.

The Works - The ultimate one

Multiple users/multiple devices - several people, computers and devices all online at the same time, using the internet heavily

Great for heavier internet users that use the web to the max. Ideal for online gaming.

Best online streaming experience; especially for multiple users

Best connected experience:
- Premium wireless router - (wireless 'N' technology for better wireless range/less change of drop outs)
- faster upload speed

Unlimited monthly downloads

Speed: Upto 20Mb or the maximum speed we can offer you on your line. Peer to peer file sharing traffic is shaped at peak times.

Some screenshots of the proposed packaged can be found further down the page...

Now then, it's great to see O2 are taking the different internet user types into account, and that obviously they're pre-empting possible issues on their LLU network with the new packages, however I do wonder how the pricing is gonna work, and how they're gonna move existing customers onto the new package. For example i'm currently on their 'Standard' package for £7.50 per month (purely due to the fact my line can only support 4mbps, although i'm currently syncing at 3mbps...), now under those seperate packages, 'The Works' would be the new ideal package for me as i'm a heavy internet user, play online games a lot, download a lot, talk to friends on teamspeak often, and on top of that I have other users in the house taking full advantage of whatever bandwidth that I leave.

Now if O2 go about this the wrong way, and start modifying prices to make the packages more expensive then myself, and probably many others aren't gonna be too happy with this and take our custom elsewhere, which is something O2 need to be very careful about...

Someone please tell me this is some sort of horrible horrible April Fools joke :(

Hmmmm, was planning on changing from Tiscali to O2 at home...what happened to their landlines they had planned to start doing?

Traffic shaping? Will be a Sky or Be(if they don't alter packages similarly) customer soon then (although I don't use P2P at all, but usenet, I suspect heavy use = P2P).

I hope not I pay for the lowest package as I can only get between 8-9mb download speed. I dont want to pay more for unlimited as I cant get any where near 20mb.

Likewise. Really hope they don't introduce any form of traffic shaping. To be honest I couldn't care less how much it costs me per month. I'm quite prepared to pay whatever it takes to give me fast speeds, unlimited downloads and no traffic shaping.

O2 have been absolutely fab so far, been with them for a couple of years now and can't fault the service thus far. Hope that isn't about to change somewhat.

/crosses fingers

I think a lot of people would move over to BE if this happens. I use the low package as I only get 5mb but I certainly wouldnt want to be on that lowest package.

I hope they dont change it as I am happy where I am at the moment and really dont want to start moving around again.

Seeing as they're the same company/network (afaik) that won't really do much beyond delaying the inevitable will it? If they feel the need to cap and shape the O2 packages, they'll just do the same to Be if all the heavy users jump ship i'd have thought.

where does it say traffic shaping?
Apart from the router whats the difference in the bottom 2 packages?

Speed: Upto 20Mb or the maximum speed we can offer you on your line. Peer to peer file sharing traffic is shaped at peak times.

Only difference I can see between packages is that it mentions "Faster Upload speed".

Very basic one has a cap, middle doesn't.

'Certain traffic managed' is another way of saying traffic shaping really. I'd guess it includes more than just P2P as the best package specifies too, possibly meaning it will include Usenet traffic.

Are there any prices for these packages? I pay £7.50 a month as i have a mobile with them

Not yet, so far this info has only come from O2 emailing a survey out asking for opinions on those packages. They may yet change significantly but it at least shows the direction O2 are thinking in.

Their bottom package at the moment doesnt have any limits whereas the new one does. Which means if you want the same service you would assumingly have to pay more for the same service you are getting. Which sucks!
