I'm sure this was said before by others but I didn't pay much attention to it myself, I upgraded to watercooling before christmas and today took it apart and inspected things as the max CPU temp had steadily risen a little.

My EK5870 waterblock wasn't too bad just a few specs of red bits floating around but my Heatkiller3 was a different story, the fine copper mesh and the silver grill thing at the bottom which presumably are the most important parts of the block were pretty solidly gunked. :(

The Feser I had used was UV Red I am now on distilled water which leads me onto a question... what additive do I need for distilled water is a silver coil enough?

Silver coil should be enough to prevent algea
If you want to doubly sure add some PT-Nuke to your loop.
ive been using it now for over a year in my loop and it's still as clear as the day i set it up.

If you want UV, red then purchase some UV reactive Tubing

Ok thanks, no I didn't want the UV I just used the Feser because it came with the kit and I had no distilled water at the time.

Out of interest, how long was it in the loop for? I was using Feaser Black until about 1-2 weeks ago where I changed to Halfrauds top up water + PT Nuke. Mine was quite clean although there was a small build up of something in the reservoir, was going for about 6 months.

Just interested to see if its specific colour or length of time that causes the gunking.

i had the same problem with FESER, i would never use a coloured liquid again, just get coloured tubing.

I've ordered some PT Nuke.

My CPU temp now with straight distilled water is 5C lower under load, I'm guessing that is a result of ungunking the waterblock rather than the change in fluid itself.

Since before christmas when I first got it (Nov/Dec time roughly), in that time I've drained and refilled the system 2-3 times experimenting with loop order so the Feser was always fairly fresh.

My reservoir and radiator are stained but my waterblocks are spotless now.
