Hey

Am looking to build a new pc from scratch and I need to buy everything incl monitor, keyboard, mouse. It'll be used by my parents, mainly for office work and running associated programs. I want to keep the costs down (~£500) and ideally want a case that's as small as poss (they don't have much deskspace).

Any suggestions?

Cheers

comes to about £550 but if you can find 2gb of ddr2 800 (cough ***the bay*** cough) - some where that should bring it under £500 and should be more than enough for your needs :)

if you go for a dual core athlon x2 that will bring the costs down even lower and will still probably be more than powerful enough :D

No real need for a quad core for general office use and it's nice to have the full retail version of Windows. If you want build yourself then Chipps spec with the Athlon 240 should be more than enough.

Just been looking at the barebone bundles ocuk offers and found this:

Shuttle SA76G2 ATI RS760 Black Barebones System - Socket AM2+ [SA76G2] £209.98

How easy are these to finish building and what would everyone suggest I get?

Was thinking of the following:
OCZ Gold Edition 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-6400C5 Dual Channel Series (OCZ2G8004GK) £79.99
AMD Phenom II X2 Dual Core 550 3.10GHz Black Edition (Socket AM3) - Retail
£76.99
Sony Optiarc AD-7240S 24x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM £15.99
Western Digital Caviar Black 500GB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (WD5001AALS) £48.99

they are fairly easy to assemble, just take your time as it can be fiddly in the confined space.
in a shuttle rather than that phenom black edition i would stick in one of the 45w athlon 2's like the 235e or 240e to keep everything nice and cool inside.
apart from that the rest looks fine to me :)

they are both 45w as well so it really depends on if the programs you are likely to use would run better with the extra 500 mhz or so clock speed and 1/2 mb cache of the dual cores or the extra core of the tri-core.
i would probably go for the 235e myself if it is mainly for office work as you say.
