Dilemma

But its the case that most great handling cars which are FWD handle well DESPITE being FWD not because they are FWD. I honestly cannot understand why you are having to much difficulty with this.

Do you love your wife? Is she totally flawless?

I suspect the answer to this question is 'Yes' and 'No' in that order, but I'm not going to sit here and say OMG IF YOU LOVE HER YOU CANT DISLIKE STUFF ABOUT HER LOLZ'.

He did specifically mention that he loved the handling though, rather than just expressing love of the car. A more accurate analogy would be saying he loved his wife's figure but disliked the fact she was a size XX. Just doesn't make much sense.

I can see where DreXel is coming from, if you loved the handling, why would it being FWD put you off so much, what else does it really make a difference to? Racing off the lights?

Actually, really great FWD chassis are great because they do things which are typical to a good FWD chassis. Things like the DC2 and DC5 Integra are FWD and proud of it, they don't try to hide it and they play to the strengths of the platform.

Again, if he had said 'it handles great for a FWD but I prefer RWD' then it would have made more sense to me :)

Yes, I love her for what she is, and that's my point.

Indeed.

Sounds like your just arguing for the sake of it, fox...

Not happy with your easter pressies? or got out of the wrong side of the bed? ;)

To be fair he is just having a discussion, nowt wrong with that :)

To be honest stuff like Clios and Civics look totally crap as well, you dont buy these cars for looks.

The Civic Type R IMO is a much better looking car than the Compact. But each to their own.

The guy stated he LOVES (rather than LIKES) the handling then takes a random swipe at FWD.

He didnt take a random swipe, he said he 'didnt like' the fact it was FWD. It's hardly a swipe.

Drexel picked up on a strange comment, end of ?

And I considered it not to be strange, so posted as such. Thats how discussions work.

Shall we have a big fight instead about whether I should dare to engage in debate on the internet? You'd prefer that, right?

There is a pointless argument going on now - but thats entirely your doing. You were the one who took this thread away from the discussion at hand, not me.

Which is what's odd, what difference does it really make? The two biggest things I can think of that FWD would have a negative effect on are the handling and traction booting it off the line.

If he loves the handling though, what negative effect is the FWD really having that would put you off the car? Unless you really love racing people from the lights, I can't think of much.

Perhaps he doesn't like the fact he can't pretend to be a mad leet drifting skillzor?

Perhaps he doesn't like the fact it won't offer the increased stability of a 4WD system in the wet? (I suspect its this one given his opening post).

Perhaps he doesn't like that weird feeling you get when you get wheelspin on an FWD car?

Perhaps he doesn't like the fact he's miss out on the perceived 'challenge' of driving a powerful RWD car without stability control? I hear many people say that some cars are 'too good' therefore they are 'boring' or something.

There are numerous reasons why you could love the way a car handles but dislike which wheels are driven.

There we go then, wouldn't have been much easier if you'd just posted something like that to start with to make your point a bit clearer? :p

You've absolutely got to be kidding. Drexel made a valid point which the OP would have eventually elaberated on himself and explained what he meant, but then as usual you appear.....I was just politely agreeing with Drexel as i thought the same thing when reading it back myself.

I'm wasting my time having a debate with an internet forum rambo but this time I unfortunately took the bait, congratulations.

Typical OCUK, maybe I should clear everything up :P.

Much as I hate to admit it, Fox is right (pains me to admit it :P), I liked the handling, I just prefer rwd:

The handling was great, felt planted, not TOO much understeer, well none really unless pushed hard, thats why I "loved the handling", however I LIKE RWD because when the moment arises a "lively/slippy" rear end can be fun, is only very occaisionally but I'm sure you get what I mean.

With regards to keeping the mk2, 70MPH cruise is 4.1k RPM and is v.loud due to being a convertible, even with hardtop it's just as bad. Coilovers crash n bang making a right racket, they are fully set up and aligned, just fact of life, GAZ aren't built for road use and it shows. On the standard suspension the car wallowed a lot and didn't handle nearly aswell though.

Anyway, hope that explains things, will have a look at a 325I, didn't HAVE to be a hot hatch, could be a saloon, just happened to be all the ones I was looking at. Another stipulation I should say is taht it should be insurable at 21 with 1 year NCB.

Anyway
Cheers

Alex

You've absolutely got to be kidding. Drexel made a valid point

He did - and I offered my opinion on that, which is how these things work. Drexel had no issues then discussing it with me, and we had a bit of a to-fro about whether you can love something whilst disliking other bits of it. Your first post seemed totally in-line with this but..

I was just politely agreeing with Drexel

So what was all that crap about easter presents? Sorry, but this is YOUR doing.

I'm wasting my time having a debate with an internet forum rambo

Says the guy who decided to but into a debate about handling with some crap about easter presents, seriously, LOL

If people post something, and I have an opinion on what they post, I'll post that. End of. If you don't like that you can either:

a) Start a stupid fight by posting pathetic comments
b) Ignore me

Your choice. What you can't do though, is pick a) and then have a whinge later about the direction the thread took. I was debating cars until you came along.

Alex claimed he loved the handling but didnt like the FWD. Drexel questioned how thats a valid opinion. I decided to argue it was a valid opinion. You decided to take the thread off at a tangent because you've got an issue with me.

It's that simple.

Makes more sense now :)
