Just wondering how many of you have ever applied for residence in either the US or Canada?

I went out to Vancouver a few years ago in Canada and I really loved it
also been to San Francisco and really fell in love with the place so big and open and many opportunities.

I'm fairly young don't have many commitments (wifes, kids etc) and have been considering moving out of England.

Anyone ever felt like or done this before? Got any advice?

USA, pretty much give up now its very tough.

Canada, as long as you are young and educated not that difficult. Will take at least 9months to get PR status.

Just hope you got some resonable capital behind you, probably all in costing me 10kish

why give up for the US?

Canada could be easier just out of interest why is it costing you that much?

I did the move from the UK to Canada last May with my Canadian fiancé.

Your best bet is a working visa then perhaps a permanent residency. Some handy websites:

It would be very helpful if you work within a field in which is on the wanted list for immigrants (I can never remember its official name).

If you don't mind me saying it seems as though you just want to do something different. I'd therefore suggest you do 6 months or so and see how you get on. The grass isn't always greener and there is a huge difference between going somewhere for 2 weeks vs. living there.

Let me know if you have any other questions. :)

EDIT: Just to add it is always good to have some capital as IIRC the Canadian government will want to see that you can provide for yourself for a few months if required.

If you don't mind me asking, how come it as cost you 10k to move to Canada? You going over as a PR? Where you moving to?

Mine was around 3k all in all IIRC, without a family. :)

thanks guys for those that moved to Canada which part did you go to?

Also why did you move?
or what makes you want to move?

Most likely the same as you, wanting something different. I'm assuming for JonRohan, he wanted to be with his fiancé.

Go for an extended holiday over there and try meeting someone, then get married. :p

Yes something different, no ties, a fresh start, a new beginning and more hope and prospects in my life.

UK seems to be going downhill too much might be a great time to leave while I've got the chance.

Aye, but I fancied a change too. We have a much much better quality of life here.

Not that easy :p . I had to send a silly amount of paperwork to prove my relationship was genuine. :(.

A lot of people think the same as that, and then move far away and begin to realise they've made a mistake. I'm pretty sure I've heard a lot of Brits are moving back over here from Australia after realising it's not all that they originally imagined.

Of course, you may have a better life from it, but don't do it 100% expecting everything to turn out better than it already is for you.

yes it is a risk perhaps 6 months out there first if it can work out like that just to see what it is like

To me Canada has been amazing.

Got a job 3 days a week earning 30k a year, all i do is sit and watch DVDs (server monitor, so just check once every hour)

Lost 5st in weight.

Getting more girls than i have ever known. During the olympics i was getting 3 a week, only ever got 3 in 6 years back home

Vancouver (i live DT, on Robson and Cardero)

I am 24 (23 when i got here)

Nope, a space cowboy

3. Well if i met the right girl, just enjoying playing around at the moment.

Only bad thing is my PR is slow, so i had the choice of living here and not working till ocotober or coming home for a few months. So i am coming home at the end of the month :(
