So..... interesting story happened today lol
We're taking down an unattended POS in 0.0, a friend of a friend offers to bring in his Titan (avatar) to help it go faster. Sounds like fun eh? Never seen a titan before.
So with the avatar the POS goes down pretty fast. We pack up, then a Legion and a Pilgrim lands. *ding ding ding*, pilgrim = cyno, time to gtfo
A whole bunch of supercarriers and carriers jump in, we pop the cyno ship before they all make it through, and we get the titan and our caps jumped out. The titan warps off somewhere and cloaks up, then the pilot disconnects before his aggro timer goes down (idiot).
Suddenly we notice the avatar has appeared on the direction scanner. Local hostiles triples in size to about 60 people... 5-10 minutes later the avatar on the scanner became a wreck. lol
The titan pilot was a french dude and this was the first time he had ever flown one. The funny part is, somehow our corp made it on the killmail so it is on our kill list. lol
Suffice to say, I don't think the titan pilot is gonna play the game for much longer.

The noob verdict so far:
Was a bit slow at the start, felt like I was forcing myself to like the game from the reviews, but as the game progressed and I managed to get a ship with MUCH more fire power, defence and power (Cormorant) the game suddenly became much much more interesting and started making me want to advance this ship as much as possible and set myself up for a new one (No idea if this is correct gameplay but I'll find out when I get there)
Once getting the hang of probe scanning my friend and I started having a blast getting into some tough fights. So all in all, the future looks good indeed!
Currently training Caldari Frigate to level 4, then move onto cruisers to level 1 + 2 then hopefuly try and land myself a caracal (heared good things about it for missions)
Noob question incoming though - Should (and do I need to) buy the retail disc first? Or is that just with some added bonuses as opposed to just paying a subscription and £5 activation fee?

No you don't need to buy the retail disc, it doesn't give you anything extra.
I thought it was a case of downloading trial, logging in to account and buying a month for £xx. Didn't think there was an activation fee. Pretty certain your first month is discounted at the moment too!

Might just buy the retail with a 60 day pass for 20 quid. Would probably work out cheaper + you can invite friends for some extra free time.

Quick Q about missions (haven't done them in years) can you have access to all 4 main faction level 4s? As in can you generate enough standings with say Caldari/Amarr without destroying your standing to Minmatar/Gallente?
I have Diplo V and others to IV but it's been such a long time I have forgotten most of the mechanics behind standings.

nice to hear an explanation for that titan kill.
Unlucky that he disconnected, but it really demosntrates that titans aren't for solo or non-alliance use - they are alliance strategic assets and should really only safely be used by those with the back-up necessary to protect them in case of FUBARs like this. He would have been better off buying a mothership for 1/4 the price I reckon.
That said, my condolences to the guy - loosing a ship to a disco sucks.

they changed standings a patch back so that, no matter how bad your standing, you can always access the lower level agents from any faction. Previously, you had to be careful, but now, its much less of a concern.
No no, he didnt disconnect. He warped to a safespot, cloaked, then logged off (whilst the system was full of enemies), without thinking that his ship is still scannable for a minute if he still had agro (which he did). Not that it takes long to scan down a titan anyway.
So while he was offline, his buddy was saying in fleet that he was safe and all was well.... until we saw him on the directional scanner. If he just stayed online and cloaked up he would've been fine.
He must have bought that toon though, nobody experienced enough to fly a titan could've been that stupid. I was told today the avatar got blown to pieces in about 30 seconds. 8 supercarriers, 1 titan, 4 dreads, 20 battleships and a whole bunch of other ships came in and did the job pretty fast. Seeing as the titan was technically unpiloted it wouldn't have been hard to kill.

Stuck at a hotel for the weekend with a laptop I don't have admin access too so can't install eve.
Does anyone know if I can get a copy of the game directory online so I can just copy it to my portable hdd? I know that works as I've done it before.
