Does anyone else miss older style FPS gaming?

Yeah the whole console xbox achievement style system that pretty much all FPS's use these days is a bit urgggghhh.

HLDM TFC and CS. I was weaned on HL and HL mods Simple FPS like DOD - 1 man one gun, 1 play style, rock, scissors, paper.

I play BF2, The default weapons are as good as the unlocks & in some cases they are better. Patches have altered the balance one way then tuther over the years but i just adapt. I am constantly picking up kits off the floor during a round as well.
The problem I have with current games is the jazzed up gfx's & the lack of feel when you kill somebody, I like to feel the impact of the kill & funky gfx's spoils it.

Interesting that you say that Malc - I'd say BF2 really lacks any sort of feel and impact when you shoot anyone with a normal gun.

I miss the days of getting together with a few of my mates in the summer holidays and playing Quake 3 and UT99 over LAN :( I think new shooters are a lot more frustrating as well, You have the unlocks as mentioned but i think its the people that play the new games as well. Theres seems to be a lot more people obsessed with winning, having amazing stats or just talking crap to people. Thats my opinion anyway :)

I don't get the marketing idea of making a game hard for new players. The way I see it is that a new player buys the game, gets beaten to a pulp until he doesn't want to play any more and chucks the game on the shelf, never to buy any of the inevitable DLC or sequals. So the company makes on its initial sale but loses its future sales by making the game so hostile to a new player.

I've only stuck with BC2 because I'd played BF2 and had some loyalty to the series (enjoying it now but wouldn't want to go back to the first rank)

Plenty have said the same over the years & I put that down to how they have there system & settings set up.
Last night I step out of a jitty a shotty a fella in the face, It made me jump even though I pulled the trigger & as the dude fell I noticed i had taken out a dude stood behind him with the same shot.
I also got rushed whilst on a roof by a Mad Medic squad but had my SVD & was well warmed up, As I dropped them the last one was within feet of me as I let go, I swear I felt the recoil in my shoulder. :p
Maybe it's just so well suited to me I don't know, Must be summit going on between me & the game as I played the second it came out & played last night & will be playing within ten mintues after writing this post. :p:p:p

COD4 MW2 wasnt designed to be competitive, it was designed to make money. Source was made to the be the best FPS ever made for competitive gameplay. There will never be another CSS style game as the companies are all about the money, even though CSS is often the most played game on steam, seconded by 1.6. You cant deny that a game released 10 years ago isnt being played because of nostalgia, rather it is very good, the same can be said about 6 year old source. Even with DLC, it seems most of the game companies want those intial sales, and arnt concerned with development unless they get money back.

I used to love soldier of fortune 2 it was fast paced and rewarded accuracy and didnt use hitboxes either it was a pixel hit detection.

Quakelive you say?

-Hit detection - check
-No unlocks - check
-Varied maps - check
-Fun weapons - check
-Strategic element - check
-Skill progression - check
-Free? :D - double check!

It's a great game and could use a fresh wave of players :)

I do miss the days of a good round of RtCW, SoF2 & CoD 1; I don't think that anything that has been released since then has had the same "gameplay feel" to it, smallish teams and fast fun gameplay really worked. Although that said I am really enjoying BfBC2, yes it has large teams but it is heavily reliant on small squads working together to achieve the objectives.

I miss health bars :( Really not a fan of regenerating health..

Me three. Just about the only fps I play seriously is TF2 and that's because although you unlock upgrades, they're different rather than just better, having their own disadvantages as well as advantages.

someone said:

I remember playing SF:gold.... Man the gibs in that game were amazing to see :D

Quakelive you say? where can I get my hands on some of that?

Agreed. the "pro" people who claim 1.6 is the best thing only do so because that is all they have been practicing all their lives. If they moved on to cs:source (much better imo), they'd have to start from scratch, and for some people that's over a decade of training investment lost. Sounds sad but it's true.

You should really have some vague clue about what you're talking about before making posts. Source is a lot better these days, granted, but it was absolutely not ready for competition in any way at release, and many would argue still isnt.

Love cs:s also loved Vietcong aswell, think i may install source again and find a private server.

Yeh a good quake sequel with uber graphics and essentially the same engine would do the trick but i think there is no place in today's market, gamers are dummed down and consoles expect a pick and play point and shoot game, we are doomed to these games for a good while now. what we need is a boom and i mean a big boom in pc users and tourneys or ladders, that would help do away with unlocks etc.

I much prefer games like cs:s, there really isn't any need for unlocks, especially in bc2 when half the unlocks are worse then the first gun you get so it isn't ever worth using them, and only a few unlocks are really beneficial, once you get off the first few levels, get magnum ammo and red dot sight and the basic stuff like defrib it's a bit pointless getting the other stuff.

Although I have moaned myself about hit reg in cs:s, it feels like a much better game to play then bc2, which has high pings no matter how close the server, and close combat just doesn't feel to the same quality as cs:s, long range stuff is good in bc2, but when close up it doesn't feel as much as challenge to get the headshot quickly like in cs:s.

Oh I am glad it is not just me then. Unlocks really grind my gears. It creates an unfair playing field biased towards those with more time to play.

Indeed, they're already better by dint of practice, why give them even more advantage?
