Does anyone else miss older style FPS gaming?

For what its worth COD1 was SUBSTANTIALLY better than cod2. COD1 was an actual pc game, cod2 started the bandwagon rolling on the consolised gameplay elements.

Plenty have said the same over the years & I put that down to how they have there system & settings set up.
Last night I step out of a jitty a shotty a fella in the face, It made me jump even though I pulled the trigger & as the dude fell I noticed i had taken out a dude stood behind him with the same shot.
I also got rushed whilst on a roof by a Mad Medic squad but had my SVD & was well warmed up, As I dropped them the last one was within feet of me as I let go, I swear I felt the recoil in my shoulder. :p
Maybe it's just so well suited to me I don't know, Must be summit going on between me & the game as I played the second it came out & played last night & will be playing within ten mintues after writing this post. :p:p:p

I agree,BF2 is still the daddy, even over Bc2,its still a better and more balanced game with better maps and better immersion.
The ony game i think will have a chance of topping BF2 will be BF3.

I dont miss "older style pc gaming", I indulge in it every day, call of duty 2, quake live, ut2004...thesre games all have a very healthy amount of players, theres no reason to "miss out"

TF2 is about the only game which does unlocks properly, they are either purely cosmetic or they are side-grades which are simply different, but not better than the default ones, BC2 has pretty much the worst unlock system I have seen in anything outside of MMO's :(

As posted above, another UT based around UT99 would be fantastic, with no stupid vehicles, double jumps and the other crap they added in the new ones :D and if it used a TF2 style unlocks system...oh my :)

Agreed. the "pro" people who claim 1.6 is the best thing only do so because that is all they have been practicing all their lives. If they moved on to cs:source (much better imo), they'd have to start from scratch, and for some people that's over a decade of training investment lost. Sounds sad but it's true.

What about Source is better other than the graphics?

I'd have to agree. Its an absolute joke that you get NOTHING to begin with. Hell i'm surprised they even let you have a gun and didn't make you knife people. They took away the repair tool, motion mines and ammo/heal boxes. You get to use a truly diabolical first weapons and its quite a few unlocks till you get better ones. Absolutely no perks at all, and the ones you do get are mostly useless in comparison to when you hit ~rank15.

Another 1 that i hated was Killing Floor. Level 1-4, ok thats fair enough, 1.5mil damage, but wait, rank 5 and 6 at 3.5/5.5 mil. And of course the ability to spawn with a weapon at those ranks is a ridiculous advantage over the previous levels, as is the increased discount.

I play BF2, The default weapons are as good as the unlocks & in some cases they are better. Patches have altered the balance one way then tuther over the years but i just adapt. I am constantly picking up kits off the floor during a round as well.
The problem I have with current games is the jazzed up gfx's & the lack of feel when you kill somebody, I like to feel the impact of the kill & funky gfx's spoils it.

totally agree. In fact i find thsi the case with most modern first person shooters even in single player.

I can't put my finger on what it is really though.

No I don't miss it, because I'm still playing it (Quakeworld)! :)
The irony is, to me the game mentioned by the OP (CoD2) isn't strictly speaking an older style FPS anyway...

nice one, last played that around 2001 and got royally pwned by some dude with a gl on DM4. I think I was alive for about 10 seconds during the whole game :D

I was thinking the same thing.... the closest 'modern' equiv to a pure FPS is quakelive. And can't get this whole medic/roles/ thing just give me some guns and some moving targets...
