Just sold my car but I forgot to keep the log book part, what to do now?

I'm not happy about to what has just happened, I did make a small contract of sale and put the time and date of sale etc but forgot to keep the log book part that I am supposed to send back to DVLA, I have called the buyer but he said that he is away from London and won't be back until tomorrow and that he will come to my place and hand it back to me. I hope that he is not lying or anything and that he will actually show up. I don't want to be part of any possible scam or pay for any fines.

Arrghhh, I am so annoyed with myself, the guy was clearly in a hurry. I can't call DVLA as its Sunday and tomorrow it'll be closed due to public holiday.

Before you ask I do have cash for the car.

Start worrying tomorrow if he dosent show up.

Or offer to go to him and pick it up if it makes you feel better.

I did but he said he was away from London until tomorrow.

EDIT: I have only got his mobile number and name from the contract. He wouldn't have paid it this was a scam, would he?

I forgot mine as well - just phoned the buyer up asking him to make sure it is posted off.

Stop worrying, the guy was in a rush, you both forgot. Then he has been busy since, it happens.

You have the money for the car, that's the main thing.

If you havent got it back by wednesday, phone the DVLA.

I did this too with a motorbike... apart from he didn't send it off and I got fined for not SORN'in it a few months later.

I'd make sure I got it back and do it myself after that...

If you don't get it back phone the DVLA, they'll ask you to send them a letter with the details and that's it.

if he doesnt show up or plays hard to get, obtain a replacement log book from DVLA then send that one off.

Assuming he knows the new owners address, otherwise what would he put on it when sending it off? (Genuine question, myself)

I hope you put the time & date on the receipt or you will be liable for all the scamera fines.
I'd check all the notes as well as there are Untold fake twentys about at the mo.
I don't like buyers who say they are in a rush, You don't rush when you buy a car unless you are Dodgey or an Idiot & I don't deal with either.

I sold a car to someone who gave false details, I informed the police who later pulled the guy over and arrested him for theft as he could not prove that he was the falsified owner :)

If he doesn't bring it back just inform the police.

Agreed - give the notes a good checkover. I'm a little too generous and trusting, sold my GFs car the other week, guy came along with his wife and baby daughter and didn't even bother to check the notes. A silly thing not to do - but they were fine thankfully.

malc - on a separate note, down visiting my folks at the mo so popped into your store - you the taller chap with glasses? /stalk mode off
