Nokia X6, opinions?

Is there anything I should know about this phone before taking the plunge and forking out the money for it? Is there perhaps something better out there for the same price (I might go £20 over my budget, but no more)

Not sure if I should just buy it sim-free for £300 or take out an 18-month plan with O2 at £15/month + £50 phone cost (i.e. £320 total) though.

The reviews I have read and watched online were not overly good. They complained abouts it sluggishness and also size and bulk of the phone. Opinions on the phone say that Nokia needs to do better.

Uses Symbian Operating System, ugly, slow and inefficient compared to other operating systems on the market.

It's not a great phone for the money. http://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_x6-review-439.php for a good, impartial review.

@Mekrel: Whilst I completely agree that Symbian is ugly and generally slow (although it's actually pretty snappy on the E72), it's generally considered a very efficient OS.

I had Symbian on my N95 (Upgrades: N95 > iPhone 3G 16GB > HTC Desire) and the N95 had the worst battery life of all of these.

That's shocking when you take into consideration that the iPhone and HTC Desire offer more functionality and are in standby considerably less than my N95 was.

I found out that it was due to the applications not exiting properly, even though I was going to options -> close in every application after I had finished with it.

Always remember going into a menu option and seeing the UI lag and temporarily show your background without anything on top before it finally loaded what you selected.

I even played with an N900 for 15 minutes in a Vodaphone store, even though it uses Maemo - they've made it look and act like Symbian

After experiencing Android and iPhone OS, the bar for me has been raised in terms of the quality of software on phones. Symbian and Maemo just don't even come close.

it would be brilliant if i could afford or find an affordable android phone but you've got to compromise sometimes... i'm guessing the consensus on the X6 is don't bother, that you're better off with the cheaper 5800 instead. back to the search again, any suggestions on what else to look at for around £300 would be appreciated

Symbian is not regarded as a cutting edge O/S but it does function very well and is reliable. I have it on my E71 and it is rock solidly stable, apps from the oVI store work fine but the choice is limited but Symbian isn't considered as 'sexy' as Android or iphone OS3.

my n95 had a better batter life than my iphone or bb 8900.

Sometimes you guys forget that people are on a budget and rave on about phones with Android and iPhone OS not realising that these cost £100-£200 more than the X6. If i bought a £150 PC, of course I'd complain about how crap and slow it is. But if it's all you can afford, you want to get the best for that price.

The question is then, for the X6 nay-sayers, is there something out there better for £300 that you would recommend?

I've been on a Nokia/Symbian for the last few years.. N80, N81, 5530..

Tbh, it was good at the time, but Symbian is now way behind the rest. Even for a budget phone (e.g. 5530) they really seem to take the budget bit a little too far. The phone seems unfinished and not properly tested prior to release.

Anyway, there are budget Android phones out there that you might prefer! HTC Smart should be out by end of April (o2) too if you're after a new phone!

Does it have to be a touchscreen phone?

The E72 is supposed to be pretty good, and although symbian is fairly pants on touchscreen phones, its not that bad with regular smartphones. And it's about £260-280 sim free.

I've only played with the X6 for an hour or so but it's my favourite Nokia Symbian touchscreen phone. The capacitive screen makes such a big difference.

Compare battery sizes. The iPhone battery is physically at least twice the size of the one in the original N95.
