Is Google becoming too big ??

Why do you have to have something to hide to care about privacy?? Something I've never understood.

Because some people think that wanting to be private is the same as having something to hide and that the only reason you're private is because you've done something wrong and don't want other people to know about it.

Usually people who are afraid of the unknown.

You make it sound like there are people individually looking at all your details.
There are many other companies that have their fingers in all sorts of areas.

Don't like it? Don't use google.

Nope, but do you? Can I see you naked please? I'd like to see where you live and what your house looks like. I'd like to see your partner too, what's her name? What do you eat for dinner? Where do you go shopping? How long does it take you to make a twosies? How big/small is your penis? What are you political stances? If there was a revolution, would you be a part of it? What colour is your underwear?

1) You cant see me naked unless you are female
2) If you are female
3) I dont have a partner, are you female? if so then look the mirror after the first 2 questions
4) What ever your name is if you are female
5) Steak
6) I shop online
7) Twosies ??
8) I dont do politics
9)Yes
10) Im not wearing any

Happy?

I honestly don't care. I'd actually prefer all my online activities to be integrated as much as possible, google is helping me do this.

I love all their services and products and trust them 100% with my data. It's not like they're suddenly going to go rouge!

And remember, their company motto: "Don't be evil"!

Why do you think google is free?

I know why Google is free.... I simply put some thoughts out there to get others opinions/views.

Because some people seem to think that the "something to hide" argument negates the argument for privacy i.e. if you are concerned about it then you must be doing something illegal or whatever....

Pretty crap argument TBH.

No, you don't have that sort of control over answers being provided to questions about you in the googlesphere.

I'll use Google for as long as they do not try to screw you over constantly like MS or Apple.
Google also use plenty of Open Source code in their stuff, and support the community.

thing is google may know this information, but people don't. google machines will automatically check this information to give whatever better service and that's it, they wont be able to hand it over the companies for the employees to read and then make fun of you or do whatever you're not wanting to happen.

your privacy has not been lost because a computer knows something about you.

yeah exactly, they're simple collecting this data to provide a better service for me, nothing else.

also as someone earlier said, too big for what?

Fixed. This is actualy just how Google responded when questioned about thier questionable privacy policy.

Make of that what you will, I for one dont like it, and it is one reason preventing me from getting a google phone.

Well it's a silly reason for you to miss out big style! *hugs my Nexus*.

Good, honest companies do exist...I think Apple and Microsoft have ruined people trust in large tech companies...

Google is providing a service, and as has been said, the machines have access, not the people. You don't care that your browser knows your password because you've entered it do you?!

Maybe I'm just terribly bitter and cynical but that really doesn't provide me with much reassurance. Even supposing Google are entirely sincere in their belief in their motto and won't act outwith it that doesn't necessarily mean that outcomes from their actions will be good - you can do plenty of things that are bad but with the best intentions in the World.

I'm not particularly fond of any company approaching a monopoly position, Google may be better than some but their policy on data handling makes me somewhat uncomfortable, their significant acquisitions across many different areas of technology aren't something I'm keen on either. Weirdly though because they're not Microsoft it doesn't seem to bother people as much.

Oh and in response to questions about what I've got to hide, I take the same view as Muriel Gray - of course I've got something to hide, it's called my private life. Until and unless there is a good reason for me to reveal it I should be entitled to keep as much or as little of it to myself as I want.

but it is kept to yourself, unless i'm mistaken and the employees are reading through your private life information? and for instance lets say they do read the information they have stored, it'll be given to the employee as information about customer 1223923 rather then with your name and address, so still your private life is still private. nothing is lost, only gained :)

"In order to showcase the potential of HTML5 over HTML 4.0.1, Google has made a multiplayer port of Quake 2 that will run in Chrome and Safari browsers. "

Not all google do is bad :D

I think the truth is Google is just like any other large company. It's priority is profit, but it's learnt that sometimes the positive effects of giving away certain pieces of software (gains them "coolness") over weighs the downside of them keeping things closed source.

Google are masters of this, they developed Andriod, whilst many hail as awesome because they gave it away. The truth is this is no more than a gimmick to them, like chrome. Google still make their money via advertising on their search engine, the code for which of course they keep closed source.

Google giving offering free services like Google Earth is akin to Shell giving away a free model car every with a few vouchers. It's pathetic. We buy it, we think Google are different, they're pro us. They're not, they're a money making company that couldn't give a rats bottom about you, me or the open source movement.

First it starts off as monitoring our serch habbits and before you know it where all in google camps! Ohhhh the humanity!
