Dell 3008wfp Ordered and now Gpu needed!?!?

You certainly don't need a 5970 to run the 3008wfp, a 5870 would do nicely.

Before my 5870 I used a 8800gts, and while not able to max out the newest games it certainly worked.

I wouldn't order another card until you have your monitor and test it with your current cards.

Best to get a 5870 and see, but tbh I'd expect to need dual 5870s or a 5970 at that res if you want to run everything maxed out. My single 5870 manages pretty well with bad company with some occasional sub 20 fps drops but can't handle anything above High in Metro 2033 @ 1920x1200, so I think you will need moar power for 2560x1600.

People have been saying this for 2560 for years, I just think people forget how cards perform the moment new ones come out.

It's a prediction based on a lower resolution, I don't think there's anything wrong with that.

I don't mean that as such, just that the top ends cards will struggle at 2560. I understand where you were coming from, I should have said I wasn't really directing it at you.

My pair of 4850s seem to handle Bc2 and Dirt2 really well at 1920x1200 res I play with most settings on high with fairly decent and certainly playable FPS. Thats why I assumed a 5870 should handle the higher res of a 30" monitor with ease. I guess its just going to be trial and error. Think I will go for a single 5870 1gb for now as 2 5850's are a little over what I want to spend, plus my other half would kill me!!

If anyone else out there has a 3008wfp I'd love to hear what your gaming with and your fps etc.

Basically what I said.

Buy one 5850 now, overclock it to see if you are happy (you probably will be), and then buy a second when you need it in the future.

I currentyl use a 5850 @ 1920x1200 with max settings on everything I play. You may have to turn down the occasional setting to keep FPS up, but you will still get great visuals at max resolution. At the moment buying anything more than one (or two) 5850's is not worth it.

Yeah I have been waiting for a hopefull price war to start when nvidia get there arses into gear and release there Dx11 cards, so the price hopefully comes down on the 5870's etc, but I have got impatient and need a bigger screen for gaming!!

Judging by these Benchmarks I found it looks like the 5870 should handle 2560x1600 resolution pretty well?

Even the 5850 don't do to badly

Wish they had tested a 5850 in crossfire.

But the cost it abit much and I was thinking of crossfiring 2x 5870 down the line when really needed, in say october when the new crysis comes out

There really is only a few percent difference between a 5850 & 5870 when both are overclocked. If you are thinking of crossfire in the long run, the 5850 is by far the better buy. Only really consider the 5870 if you do not intend to overclock.

I'm tempted by the 30" Dell too, but I think the cards aren't really ready for it yet. My general rule is if you can't play all current games using a single card at 60fps+ then don't buy the screen.

The 5850 is a good overclocker and the 5870 isn't?? Going by those benchmark scores the 5870 is quite a lot better at higher resolutions than a 5850...
I have always struggled overclocking my 4850's even with uprated coolers, I just got crashes and freezes in game. So I assumed overclocking Ati cards was pretty pointless. Also I won't be water cooling the cards yet so would that effect overclocking?

That will always be the case as new games are released.

If a game comes out that's more demanding. A card comes out that can play it. At the moment card manufacturers expect you to have 24" or 22". So 24" is the one to buy. 30" is expensive, so not many people have them, so the cards dont cater for them - they can use that as an excuse to launch a new card later. Or to make you buy another card for SLI/Crossfire.

I would have thought 2x 5870 in crossfire would easily handle any game out there with well over 60fps on a 30" monitor. Can't really see where your coming from regarding 1 graphic card as so many ppl nowadays day run crossfire and sli with no problems at all, and its so easy to do.
