There is a whole raft of them, each leading on from either one of the six movies.

Has anyone read some, got any suggestions? Are they sanctioned by G. Lucas himself?

There is one that continues after Revenge of The Sith, and some that continue after episode six (what are official?)

I was just on wookiepedia (I think) and got lost with the offspring of story lines !

Any help to understand, and any recommendations will be appreciated!

It's been quite a while since I've read most of these, but I remember Truce at Bakura being a pretty decent read, as was the X-Wing saga, most of the expanded universe stuff is pretty good (at least the stuff set after the films, and written up til a few years ago), uptil the Yuuzhan Vong saga which took the series in a different direction I wasn't too fond of, and personally I'd advise recommending because A) Its set later than just about anything else so if you read it straight away you'd be a bit like WTF happened here?? B) Completely altered the universe in some ways.

Shadows of the Empire is another recommendation off the top of my head.

I cant remember where it is, bit I believe there are a few websites that list the chronology of the expanded universe novels, which might be a good idea to look at.
IIRC they used to be published by Bantam books, so might be a good place to start!

The Darth Bane trilogy of books is well worth a read.

Path of Destruction
Rule of Two
Dynasty of Evil

I haven't ready any before return of the jedi, doesn't interest me.
These are very good triliogys
ABY = after battle of Yavin

The Thrawn Trilogy
Heir to the Empire by Timothy Zahn (9 ABY)
Dark Force Rising by Timothy Zahn (9 ABY)
The Last Command by Timothy Zahn (9 ABY)

The Jedi Academy Trilogy
Jedi Search by Kevin J. Anderson (11 ABY)
Dark Apprentice by Kevin J. Anderson (11 ABY)
Champions of the Force by Kevin J. Anderson (11 ABY)

If you're reading them, most of the stories published by Del Ray are Lucas-approved books. There are many different books, all tying everything together.

Anthology beside, I found that if you just want to continue the saga, pick up the start of the New Jedi Order series. That will be (speculation) where movie Episode 7 [would] start. These are excellent character-development stories that take over with Luke mastering his powers and trying to get the Jedi going again.

Vector Prime
Dark Tide I - Onslaught
Dark Tide II - Ruin

AcidHell2 is correct, also. There are some excellent fillers in between the movie material.

I'd recommend the X-wing series which focuses and expands on some of the characters seen very briefly in the original trilogy. The later part of the series introduces a new squadron and some pretty good stories and characters. Well worth a read. I'd also recommend the republic and imperial commando series. Also another vode for the New Jedi Order series with the Yuzhong Vong.

Agreed. I thought the New Jedi Order series was awesome!
