BMW’s flagship M6 performance car is unlikely to be replaced when the next 6-series arrives, autocar.co.uk has learned.

Instead, its position at the top of the range is likely to be filled by a V8 sports car drawing cues from BMW’s Vision Efficient Dynamics concept.

The 6-series has gradually evolved into a grand tourer since its 2004 introduction rather than an out and out sports car; this has led to the M6, a car aimed primarily at US buyers, sitting awkwardly within the range. So a replacement isn’t likely to appear in next year’s new 6-series line-up.

The M3 coupe-size Vision ED offers M3 performance with Toyota Prius levels of economy and CO2 emissions. A prototype ED will be running by the summer; it’s intended to be a hi-tech sports car that showcases all of BMW’s eco-tech in the packaging of a performance car.

The Vision ED concept uses an advanced diesel-electric hybrid system producing a total of 356bhp and 590lb ft. Its turbocharged three-cylinder engine could make it into the next 1 and 3-series models. But the production version of the Vision ED may get the next-gen M5’s twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8.

Using this engine will ensure the firm still offers a car with M6 levels of power and performance, but the inclusion of much of Vision ED’s eco-tech, as well as that car’s more daring styling, would allow the car to be marketed as a standalone model.

BMW R&D chief Klaus Draeger has said a future BMW supercar has to “be intelligent and dramatic-looking, something like the ED concept”.

The car would give the firm the direct rival to the Audi R8 and Porsche 911 ranges, and would also allow BMW to compete with AMG’s forthcoming baby SLS model.
About time . BMW could come out with something really special here :).

I'm sorry what? ...a 3 cylinder engine! ...and a diesel no less ...I fail to see how that can be anything but rough and nasty, whatever car they put it it.

Yea it could do, but then it might not, they may very well use the engine they speak of in something anyway. It's just not BMW.

It's what's needed to be done so that BMW can continue to make the more awesome vehicles that smash euro regulations. Get used to it, all companies who make very powerful cars will be bringing things out that lower the average across the range

We aren't talking about normal cars though we are talking about high performance cars.

So no, absolutely not. I will not get used to it, I will bitch and moan and complain about it until the end of days. I do not like it, in fact I despise it. And I will only be dragged into this kicking and screaming and grinding my teeth. I will just continue to drive older cars if I have to. Although they seem to still be making 'some' cars with proper engines so I'll be alright for a bit I think.

There is no replacement for displacement.

None of this would be needed if the damn EU and tree huggers shut the hell up. God is in the internal combustion engine, not the trees.

No, and I don't want to either, 3 cylinders and hybrid electric power ...no thanks. It's a god damn tragedy.

I know the old 'you shouldn't knock it till you try it' adage, well I think I know what I do and don't like well enough now to know that I wont like it, and oddly enough I'm right about 90% of the time when I think I'm not going to like something and then I do try it. Ok so 10% of the time I am wrong, but I'm happy with that.

Well like turbo-chargers, sort of ...yes and no really. They do help compensate for lack of capacity in that they force more air into the engine, thus the engine injects more fuel and you get more bang in the same space, i.e. more work done thus a more efficient engine for it's capacity.

I don't really think they do replace displacement though, they feel different the power delivery is different and the noises and character of the engine are different.

A supercharger is like having your whining mother in law and girlfriend under the bonnet of you car whining together after being out on the smirnoff ices accusing you of cheating on them with a female goat.

Lol, I know they aren't that bad, Mum's car has one.

I was just wondering as I am sure that I have heard multiple times that Superchargers, unlike turbos, are a replacement for displacement (sound aside).

I thought that since they can give a linear bit extra the driving characteristics were the same?

Nonsense, a 3cyl engine is not progress, it's a joke, for tiny little cars only.

people honestly believed the same about the motorcar.

Look at that crazy man thinking his carriage doesnt need horses. Just like everybody was absolutely 100 % convinced the world was flat.

Smaller more fuel efficient engines may appear to be the automotive equivalent of the mini disc, but somehow i dont think it will be.

You know my favourite audio medium is still vinyl though :) ...you can't beat the sound of a good deck with some high quality well recorded vinyl.
