Evening all.

I am looking at booking a break to Thailand for roughly a month or so. However with the current political unrest that is occuring I am slightly hesitant to go ahead and actually book. I do know that some fellow OCUK'ers are out there at the moment so I wanted to get their views on the situation.

I have checked the Foreign Office advisory and it is currently stating "We currently advise against all travel to some specific areas of Thailand and all but essential travel to other specific areas of Thailand". Obviously this is worrying but I've been to Egypt when a similar advisory was issued and we were fine.

I am looking at travelling from the North to South, probably Chang Mai, Bangkok (I may have to avoid), Pattaya, Koh Pha Ngan, Koh Samui, Krabi, Phi Phi and Phuket.

I was there last year when bus's were being set on fire etc and everything was fine for me in bangkok and pretty much no sign of it else wear in the country.

My advice to you is if you see a big mob of people in red , put on a blue top and say Gin Kii

My gf has just been out there, and she's scared of her own shadow. If she can, I'm sure most can. She never mentioned any problems.

A friend of mine was due to go traveling there last time there were similar issues with the Red Shirts. However, that was when they blocked the airport, so she was unable to fly in as flights were canceled.

How much would you need say for if you went for 2 weeks?

Do you want to stay in hostel , guest house , hotel? Do you want to eat out in restaurants or stalls. Wich part of thailand? etc If you want to do it on a budget way i would say 20-30 per day depending on your tastes is a good rough figure to have.

I hope it's all ok out there as my brother's going for 2 months and I'm going for a few weeks! I suspect it's totally fine in all the tourist areas as long as you're sensible.

Mind you I've also been to Venezuela, and Colombia several times, been approached by people trying to possibly kidnap my then girlfriend ('come with us to the office to win a prize'....) and had the nearby shopping centre we went to nearly every day bombed a few days after I last visited, so it takes a lot to faze me now :p

Well, obviously a hotel for 2 weeks tops restaurants and stalls and night life funds etc..

A rough estimate would be good..

Well you may as well stay in a guest house as it is pretty much a hotel - Double bed , cable tv on suite air con etc will cost around £15/night in bangkok to £25/night if you go to the islands. Food in your average restaurant will cost about £3-5 meal and about £1 at a stall. beer wise big bottle will cost £1 which i think is 2 pints. A bucket will cost £5 which will be a bottle of vodka/whiskey + mixer. Prostitutes vary depending on quality...i would say take £50 a day you will be fine and have plenty of money left over for activities.

Alright cheers mate.

What places should I hit? Which ones are most lively? (Nightlife)

Christ. Ignoring flights obviously, are you staying in 5 star hotels and eating the poshest food.
Id say 50quid a day was a lot, 3 times that, your spending 7000baht a day

4 or 5 star, the figure I quoted did not include hotels

food occasionally posh but often £10 pp

I do drink a bit ;)

last trip was

2 flights to BKK EVA air - permium economy

4 nights - Majestic Grande Bangkok - Grande Deluxe room

2 Flights to phuket with Thai air - economy

10 nights in Le Meridien beach resort

That lot was about £3300 for the 2 of us

then we spent £2k or so

Did 3 months there in 2008 (august, september, october) Amazing country. £20 which included internal travel, accomodation, food, drink, moped rental, trekking and even a week long diving course in koh tao. Will post more info tomorrow. - £10 for food, lol. My most expensive meal was 200bht in koh toa which got me a seafood bbq with a whole crab! (£3.22 at the time)
