BT Broadband and Gaming, am I reding this right

The Latency to the homehub isnt the issue, its a false latency as the router doesnt have ping as a high priority, ie it isnt a true value!

Also Billysielu has a good point there, i havent witnessed this myself but i have had friends with the exact same issue!

Change the UDP threshold, im not sure what the exact value is ment to be but i would agree with him with the values of 130-150 as he seems to know about this ;)

BT's fine for gaming, never had any issues with it on the gaming front. Silly caps and whatever when surfing is another issue.. anyhow.

Its probably the Homehub. I noticed you mentioned L4d(2), source engine games have a terrible history when it comes to working properly on the homehub, especially later models (Oddly).

Use another router and i bet your issues go away.

I used to play WoW religiously on my BT connection and it almost never let me down - good pings and stable connections.

The biggest POS on BT's network is their awful and stupid traffic shaping.

Bad routing.

On virgin 50mbit i can get less than 20 latency on some quake live servers, but normally around 30-50.

Use a visual tracert and you can see if the tracert is going way out of the way or if it just bouncing back and forth unable to find the route.

Maybe you need to set the RATE in the game, some games have network configs that you will need to set.

Why have you got address from hop 2 to hop 9.

It seems like thats what the main difference between everyones is. Like guys have said try another router. I had a netgear one once that was a complete nightmare on games wouldn't find games on MW2 on PS3 and the 360. Changed the router and hey presto works fine.

On another note why is your router IP set to 192.168.1.254? Normally isn't it 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1?

It doesn't bloody matter what his router IP is, common practice might be .1 but .254 is just as fine.

The reason there is no DNS addresses for the first X hops also makes FA difference - just his ISP (BT in this case) has not set any records for those IP's.

As I think I mentioned in myfirst response there is naff all wrong with his ISP, no packet loss no issues.

The problem (as I also suggested) likely lies with something the HomeHub is doing, as pointed out by someone a bit further down on the first page who has offered a solution, though likely the technical explanation for that will have gone well over the OP's head he should be able to figure out what settings to change and might solve his issue.

Seriously, all ranting aside why do people insist on chiming in on posts on this forum when they don't appear to have a clue about what they're talking about or have anything useful to add?

To be honest it sounds like you don't have a clue what your talking about. Stop having digs at people who are trying to help, when your not helping either. Its all good saying the homehubs the problem, but its not why its the problem.

Cheers Now!

All these ISP routers suck for gaming, homehub/wirelessbox they mess up the firmware with their own propriety junk to save people from their own stupidity but end up breaking things in the process. I dont know what the homehub started life as but i know the o2wirelessbox is just a crippled thomson 585.

Ok WIJ this seems to be the main consensus of replies , and yes you are correct my technical knowledge is somewhat limited , I am happy to replace the hub for a budget of around £50 , anyone suggest something ?

Bald-Eagle22,

Have you taken the advice of wij and billysielu on board and had a look into the HomeHub configuration?

Fair enough there are going to be people who rat on BT and their provided hardware regardless, but, you know, rather than just rely on one forum thread at OcUK, Google for related issues and check other relevant forums such as your ISPs (should one exist) and game-community.

before do anything, do you have any friends have a spare router you could borrow?

or even buy an ex sky or 02 router for £15 from bay?

I had similar issues with my home hub

i swapped it out for a netgear ADSL all in one modem router and have had no problems or game disconnects since !

Bald-Eagle, you probably dont need to change the router but just configure it so it works correctly, dont have to splash the cash on a new one.

Like billysielu said earlier, its probably just the UDP threshhold, make it higher!
