Jeremy: Britain doesn't have good roads

Britain has some good roads, especially Scotland, but when you drive or ride in Europe you realise just how good their roads are. Southern Spain seems to be like a giant race track with billiard table smooth roads and next to no traffic

Sure are some stunning roads in Spain. Just a pity the police are hot on speeding over there.

We have extreme weather here in the UK relative to southern Europe - the roads are undoubtedly easier and cheaper to maintain.

However, one observation from having travelled around a fair bit, I get the impression that Britain maintains more smaller roads than other countries (or we have more of them), and the budget appears to be spread more thinly.

Oxfordshire has left the roads in a disgusting state, the only place that tops it for sheer arrogance is Buckinghamshire, which i can assure you is much worse.

Lincolnshire on the whole is pretty good considering the rest of the country.

I think we have some very poorly kept commuting roads, especially here in the Kirklees area. The holes are terrible and the roadworks seemingly never-ending. On the other hand, there are some excellent driver's roads with beautiful scenery if you care to venture out.

One of my all-time favourite routes starts in Holmfirth, goes through Snake Pass, The Strines and Langsett. Round trip is just short of 50 miles and there is a lot of variety with fast straights, long sweeping bends and some very tight s-bends.

Also quite fond of the drive up to Thwaite via Hawes and Buttertubs Pass.

I recall an episode of Top Gear some time ago where Mr. C said something along the lines of "rubbish, I can drive ten minutes/miles from anywhere and find a great road".

Goodbye.

That would be Ron Jeremey . . . . .
That can't be right, he loves to take some reet dirty back-roads...

This year I have already visited North Wales, a few blasts out & about in the Midlands & i'm literally right now organising a 1,000 mile trip up to Fort William in Scotland. :)

For me the B-roads in Britain are fantastic for the pleasure of driving, roads that are cambered & bumpy & weathered add to the skill & judgement required to pedal along.

But unfortunately they are sadly being reduced thanks to the reduction in speed-limits & increase in unnecessary scameras :(

But the roads which are highly regarded amongst the petrolhead community are of decent maintenance, aren't of low speedlimits & aren't congested, you simply have to plan your jolly!
No doubt many roads do suffer the above issues & those which don't are becoming rarer, most noticeable of late - The Cat & Fiddle :(

Brilliant driving roads round here, just head West, North if you're feeling adventurous. However, the road quality leaves something to be desired, there are a few roads that we'd normally go on that have suffered badly from the Winter. Thankfully the Hartside pass is still in good nick, been up there twice this weekend :D

Not really. Main roads, well, thats the risk you run. Pretty much everywhere else there's hardly a cop to be seen in southern spain.

Yeah, thats my experience too. Plus, the roads are often so twisty you struggle to break the speed limit anyway

thats often part of the fun.... straights are boring:)

UK has some great roads, but they only fun at 3am when no one is on them.

I've seen cars straight up fall through some of the potholes in Abingdon. Never to be seen again*

The roads are a joke, some really nice roads around here, but as said, the state of the tarmac means you can't really enjoy them

* This may or may not be a slight exaggeration

Some great roads around here, and slightly further away to.

But a good road to me is not necessarily one you would like.

Im quite happy to go ride the bike up the middle of no where out the back of Pitlochry and up the highlands on little quiet roads than main routes. (not motorways)

I think this is wrong.

So do you think Britain has excellent driving roads?

I don't.

Now I haven't yet driven in Britain yet but correct me if I'm wrong, you still have potholes and congestion.

Unless the capacity of the roads in a place meets demand, and the roads are well maintained, I'd say a country has good roads.

My definition of a good road is making good progress while driving it and not break/damage your car on it.

Key phrase in this post:

Now I haven't yet driven in Britain

Do you seriously think that every single road in the country is congested around the clock and ridden with Potholes? Really?
