Wondering if anyone can help, my local sunbed shop has recently got a thing called a Vibro Step its one of them vibrating platforms that claim to help you lose a bit of fat, just wondering if these things actually work and if its worth me having a go on them....cheers
 
From what I have seen it's very good for core strength, as if you are doing various balancing exercises it forces you to constantly correct your balance far more than usual.

I may be wrong though, thats just from observation.

My local consol has these things inside the stand up sunbeds ....

It will burn a few more kcals than doing the exercises on there own.

Remember that 1lb of fat is about 3500kcal, so in the grand scheme of things it won't make the blindest bit of difference.
The place is using it as a money making scheme
 
Thought they were just called vibration plate? Anyway the one at the gym I frequent is one of them that vibrate at so many thousands or million times a second: it sounds like a jumbo jet on take-off eek: I just use it for a warm up for 30 secs and a heavy duty massage as it "shakes your brains and makes your teeth chatter" :D

Seen people do press ups on it: squats,use straps like trx; lean on it: all kinds of things. Good for generall all purpose toning or alleviating stiffness assuming we are on about the same thing?

In all seriousness they are very good for people who want to add variety to their usual routines, who are not very mobile or who do not wish to engage in any serious, strenuous exercise due to health issues. For people in good health they are a suppliment.

Very popular with the ladies and some "fitness fanatics". Bodybuilders would avoid them, unless of course they wanted to use the power plate for easing muscle tension or treating an injury. Ignoring the hype a similar model to the one I used to treat a rotator cuff injury, is the one in the video provided in this link. You can see the kind of weird things people get up to on them. Again I'm assuming this is what the op was referring too:

They've been rolled out to Virgin Active (all 72 UK ones) for quite some time and are very popular, not going anywhere for a while chappie ;)

PowerPlates (and their variants) are an excellent method for getting additional muscle fibre engagement. NBA basketball teams, and rugby teams use them for pre-activation before games as they can improve contractual force.

They're absolutely awesome and use vibration as a means of acceleration training, increasing rate of acceleration without a decrease in mass.

You can do stability, isometric and dynamic movements on them, and some awesome explosive (plyometric) stuff too. They superb for stretches, and massage by activating the lymph system.

You cannot, however, stand on them and expect them to do anything for you at all :) They burn fat, just like running does, but not if you just stand on a treadmill ;)

No doubt they will be used professionally for a long time, but general purpose use (as you alude to) will make loads of them useless in most gyms, because people will expect to do nothing and get something lol
 
From what I've been told (by serious trainers not the gym staff), they're good for promoting fibre production to help rebuild muscles quicker, and good for DOMS recovery.
 
Anybody had any experience relieving glute DOMS on these things? We have 2 in a small room at our gym and they don't get a lot of use.

My arse is seriously stiff today so am considering just plonking my butt down on one of them and letting it work it's magic!
 
Give it a go. I've seen loads of people sitting on them and doing everything bar Morris dancing. Be careful with them though. If it is a decent one I would set it to low :D

Couldn't resist this but I'm glad it was only your buttocks you were referring to:D

Yeah I suppose it depends on the club. The gym runs Power Plate classes several times a week. And most of my clients make use of them to some degree or another in their programs. I've had a lot of success with rehabilitation as well as treating neural impingement.

The benefits of PP are also quite apparent in neuro-muscular disorders like dystrophy and MS, and more studies are demonstrating how effective they can be. I think acceleration training is here to stay, at least in the bigger clubs. I doubt we'll be seeing them in the pokey gyms, or sports centre facilities any time soon.

You're ****ing right about something for nothing too. The amount of times I hear "So I can stand on it and lose my cellulite?" is just ridiculous.

Their activate the lymph system and increase blood flow, so lactic acid clearing is improved quite considerably. A combination of massage and stretch should help a huge amount. Use something like a swan stretch with glute in contact to combine massage and stretching.
