Next BMW M6 to rival Audi R8

Lol, I know they aren't that bad, Mum's car has one.

I was just wondering as I am sure that I have heard multiple times that Superchargers, unlike turbos, are a replacement for displacement (sound aside).

I thought that since they can give a linear bit extra the driving characteristics were the same?

:D

Moeks, you don't get it. They need to do this so that they can continue to build normal fast high performance cars. This isn't the way forward for all their cars, it just allows them to continue with the better cars

I do get that, but what I am seeing is some of these 'weird' engines actually be pegged as performance engines. Not just for normal cars ...normal cars don't have 356bhp and 590lbs/ft of torque.

But they don't 'need' to do this at all, it's just sodding government legislation that's the issue, we 'could' all be driving around in 400ci V8's if we didn't have a load of eco-Nazis and socialist thieves taxing us to hell and back,

It's to make them sell, so that they aren't just a huge failure for the company. If they have to do something then they will want to make money from it :p

/grinds teeth

Yea well, they wouldn't be doing this at all if they hadn't been backed into a corner. Not until the oil runs out anyway.

I would like to believe that normal cars can use something other than the valuable oil ...which can be saved for performance cars, but I just have a feeling that isn't how things are going to be.

Get used to cars like this.

Also I doubt you are actually planning to buy a brand new car, and hence the cars you will buy depends on the opinions of the people who bought them new, not yours as a second hand buyer.

The current M6 looks sad, bloated and is horrendously ugly; the only decent thing about it is the wheels. It'll take quite the overhaul to make it an attractive proposition when compared to an R8.

I do find it interesting how peoples opinions differ on looks.

Personally I really rate the existing 6 series, I think it looks ace. Whereas the R8 looks to me like a TT that's been given a bad cut and shut job and has resulted in a seriously mis-proportioned mess that even Liza Minelli would feel embarrased to step out of.

The M6 should be a seriously powerful vehicle, the current one is rapid but perhaps not boasting the level of performance you'd expect from the top of the range BMW.

Surely this this should be a revival of the 8 series, rather than the 6?

i think its supposed to be more of a revival of the M1 more than an 8 series ?

Doubt it will be called the M1 though, but the M1 was BMWs last supercar effort wasnt it ?

Have you ever been in or driven an M6? ...because I have, and I assure you it is every bit the Ferrari killing lambo bating bruiser it's made out to be, it might not look like it at a glance but that engine is phenomenal, once you get the revs over about 4.5k it pulls like you wouldn't believe.

My Dad had one for ooo about 2 years 2 and a bit years perhaps. Hell of a car, although I'm not personally that keen on those 'race bread' engines that the M6 and M3 use ...I prefer the older style V8s from an acoustic and power deliver point of view, but the engines are none the less astounding you think initially, oh this isn't actually 'that' fast indeed the M6 'only' has about 370lb/ft of torque or something like that and it makes that further up the rev range than you might expect from a V10 ...but the power really comes in when you work the engine and **** me does it go ...when it's shoving all 507 of those horses into the road and you have the car in full M mode you really do feel it, it goes like a guided missile.

My particular problem is with the 'drawn out' nature of the styling. The front looks like a jowly, heavy-set dog, whereas the rear just looks paunchy - as if it's suffering from a severe case of muffintopitis.

It's a saggy package overall - quite the opposite to the taut, sculpted styling of the R8 which has poise due to its wide, squat-like design.

I have to say I agree with Mr_Sukebe on this, I prefer the M6 in terms of looks to the R8 too, I've never really been that taken with the way the R8 looks. I'm not that taken with the M6 looks either but I think it looks better than the R8 does.

Quite.
I just find that there's something not quite right about the R8. I understand that they're fabulous cars, but I simply can't shake I ugly I find it.
Like most people on here, it's sometimes amusing to dream what you'd put in your garage if you won the lottery. Purely on looks, the R8 gets instantly binned for me.

Arhh a man of true taste ...it was the Linn Sondek LP12 that actually got me into Vinyl in the first place, my Dad had one when I was little an original one
from the '70s with Naim pre and power amps ...well he still has it now actually although it' been refurbished since and the amps have changed, still Naim though.
