Car insurance nightmare

It's coming closer to when I will purchase my first car, about two months if all goes well. I was hoping to get a Ford Fiesta about 10 years old, which costs between £1500 and £3000. I work full time this year so I can afford the car no problem and no need to get finance. Hoping next year to go to college to help me learn the electrical side of my job. I'm also 18 and male.

I've been on this forum before arguing about car insurance and how unfair the prices are to young male drivers. It's all about statistics and there's nothing I can do to not be classed as a "high risk driver". I accept that, but finding insurance is becoming a nightmare even though I did pass plus.

I started on comparision websites, getting quotes around £3.5K upwards, which is shocking, surely I'm doing something wrong?

I then phoned Direct Line getting a quote for about £3.5K aswell, but the best price I've managed to find is £2579 from Aviva online. I was hoping to find insurance between £1000 and £2000, which is reasonable for a young driver right?

If anyone has any tips getting the quote below £2000 for an 18 yr old male as the main driver on the car I would be over the moon, (but not having to drive an old lady car such as a Fiat Panda or some classic car which I know nothing about.). I have tried quoting for a Ford Mondeo already btw it works out more expensive than a Fiesta. All other suggestions would be welcome though:).

Also I would rather go with a big name insurer who can guarantee me getting a NCB for not making a claim, because this is essential so not to pay this much ever again. Don't want to risk a company going bust and getting no NCB.:p

So any tips to get car insurance < £2,000 fire away!

Bloody hell, that's ridiculous! I'm sure peeps on here get it for less than that.

Have you got a London postcode? What are you putting as your occupation? What sort of excess is on the policy?

Well for the car I just chose a Ford Fiesta 1.25 Zetec 2000, idk the exact details because I haven't bought the car I will get it in 2 months.

I don't live in London.

I'm just saying I'm an electrical engineer because my actual job is too specialized to be listed. However, does saying your a student make it cheaper than full time employment?

I would do about 5000 miles a year.

I will pay as much excess as I am allowed, I just select £500.

Car garaged, fully comp or third party it doesnt make any difference, imobalizer on the car I think, etc.

EDIT: @ Janesy B, thanks for the list I will try them.

Also is it better to phone or do online?

iirc if you phone they often have more options for occupation, so you may be able to get something closer to your actual job which may make a difference.

Certainly when we've done our home insurance it's been more reliable to phone than use the computer as on the phone you're dealing with a human who can do much more than the computer programme (for example he/she can contact someone higher up the chain if say your profession isn't listed in the computer, or there is some other question not on the computer).

Best to phone really, as for the car, consider a Focus as insurance groups seem to be lower and it's more of a sensible family car rather than a car owned by the typical teenager.

I don't think the occupation change would make much difference tbh.

Anyway I just tried young4drivers.co.uk and - £3271.43. Not a good start.:(

That really is a crazy price... if all you have told us is what you are putting in, Is your post code really bad?
Try a different car also.

Well I just live in a rural area so it can't be bad.. Anyway I could try a postcode in a "good area", what could I try so I can see if my postcode is bad?

I will try some other cars aswell.

typical post code

SR6 0HW

I got quotes on that post code (my old address) when I first started driving and they were £1000-£1500

Not a great post code but aint too bad

that is bloody ridiculous

I might not have mentioned I don't have any NCB, maybe thats the problem?

Would it be a foolish thing to pay something like £2500 for the insurance? If I can't find anything cheaper? One thing I haven't tried is adding my parents to my policy them as named drivers, should I try that? Even though they probably wont ever use the car.

Adding parents as named drivers will make a significant reduction.

You'll only end up paying £2500 if you get bored and cant be bothered to put the legwork in - you need to phone these places, play them off eachother for the best quote, negotiate with them
