CPU Manufacturing process in pictures

It can be quite a big percentage in the early days of production on a new Chip type. Thats the reason the PS3 was so expensive in the beginning of its life. The Cell Processor Yield was extremely bad.

ah, surly once they perfect the manufacturing the end cost should rapidly fall then. marketing ><
but it is amazing how they make them.

almost makes me feel bad for overclocking the little beggars,...

almost:D

Haha, yep I agree.

Another thing I was wondering, do they set out to create die's at set frequencies like at 2.6ghz or 3ghz
or is it just during the end testing process when they test each die they just see what it can cope with and then label them up accordingly?

The keychains aren't anything too fancy although obviously quite collectable I guess.

Here's a couple of examples. notice how much detail you can see on the old 386 manufactured at micron levels!

If you're after a bit more bling theres also a gold P3 keychain available :p

They test and then label up at highest possible speed mainly, unless there is more demand for lower clocked cpu's which is why we have a lot of cpu's rated at 1.6, 1.8 etc that can easily run at much higher speeds without any extra cooling and voltage tweaks etc

Very interesting. Much more complex than I thought it would be. Makes you wonder how the hell someone can come up with the idea in the first place.

So where can I get one of these key chains....
