Car insurance nightmare

No - a named driver doesnt have to use the car

Doing it the other way around is, however - as you are claiming they drive the car more than you

No, That's the other way around with you as named driver.

They may use the car for an emergency.

I've got my Dad on my insurance as a named driver and chances are he'll never use the car. Made sod all difference to the price at my age, but it's just handy in case he ever does need to use it

How long have you actually had your license for? I've found that my premiums absolutely nose dived when I had my license for a year (regardless of NCB). As a result I'm looking at quotes of £1,700 to insure a 300BHP Imported Toyota Soarer, despite being in a crap area and not even being 19 yet . That's with admiral

Keep looking though. It looked bad when I was looking for first car insurance but I got lucky with Quinn Direct (Who seem to be completely random. I paid about £1100, although a friend took out a policy after passing a month after me and spent £2,300 to insure a slower, lower insurance group car ). I spent a fair bit less than £3,000 to insure my modified GTI and I was still in my first year of driving although that was on a classic policy with very limited miles.

Sarcasm detection fail there!

Dont just try something on confused.com and write it off as a non starter. In fact, stop using comparison websites alltogether, they're a waste of time for young drivers

Yep they are, i find using bells site gives me much lower quotes than the comparison sites normally by a few hundred quid

Young insurance sucks, my first year was £1850 on Direct Line (18yo), this year it's £650 (19yo) with Aviva.

Push your car value down a bit, for example saying it's worth £1000 could put you in a different insurance bracket to saying it's worth £950.

Had the licence about 10 and a half months I think, so when I get the car in two months it will be a year. How much difference does it make?

Wow why did direct line tell me it would be £3,686 and I'm the same age???

I've got my dad and sister on my insurance, my dad's used my car twice, and I doubt my sister with 2 kids has an interest in wanting to drive a Focus ST, lol.

Insurance is a complicated beast, based on much more than just age and experience - which is why your opening comment of it being "unfair" is a bit silly.

It's down to the combination of everything they ask you, something a lot of people fail to appreciate. Take Joshy's comment above about Quinn being "random" for charging his friend more on a slower car - randomness has nothing to do with it, if someone with his friends details is more likely statistically to have a crash than him then it's going to cost more - end of story.

That's a good point with adding a parent to insurance, adding my father to mine this year further reduced my quote by £200
