8800GTX Artifacting

Hey guys,

Not sure if this is theright place to post, so sorry if its not. Basically earlier today I had what appears to be artifacting on my 8800. I was doing my uni work and both of my monitors became filled with red pixel like artifacting all over the screens.

I assumed it was the graphics card so I turned everything off, opened my pc and reseated my graphics card- it all turned on ok, but the same artifacting happened as soon as I got into windows. I restarted and then it happened repeatedly on or just before the windows splash screen (so i couldnt even use the pc).

Turned everything off for a bit and restarted into safe mode fine. Artifacting happened a little bit- but its been fine now for the past hour and a half or so, and I've now rebooted back into windows and things seem ok at the minute.

Artifacting looked like this;

Not my screenshot, but those red areas was exactly what was happening- to the point of covering the screen, and locking up the pc

Anybody got any idea if its just a heat issue? Or a VRAM issue? Should I be looking around for a replacement graphics card? If I need one I can get one early tomorrow morning (mate can drive me to OcUK)- but I really need to be certain as I've got uni deadlines coming up and I really don't want my pc to completely die before then.

Spec is latest nvidia drivers, 8800GTX, Q6600, windows 7 64bit, Abit IP35 Pro mobo, 8 gb ram.

Any help appreciated. If I do need a gfx card- can anybody recommend a fairly cheap card for £100ish with 2x dvi inputs thats around the same kinda of spec as a 8800gtx?

Cheers

That's exactly how my 8800GTX started to die. Started artefacting in graphic intensive apps, then every so often whilst in windows. Took about two weeks to give up the ghost completely.

I'm no expert but I'd say your card is on its way out too.

Cheers for the replies guys. Shame its on its way out- especially coming up to my uni deadlines.

@Soundood- I had a look for driver corruption and people seem to say that it doesnt affect them in safe mode as it boots up in vga and doesnt require drivers... whereas I've had this artifacting in safe mode and the boot screens.

I'm thinking it could be heat related and the card is on its way out. I'll have to get a cheap card to last me until my deadlines are all done and then I'll think about upgrading properly I guess.

Anyone else got an opinions on this?

Dead video card my laptops 7950GTX did this before it died :( ended up having to bin it.. :(

on the plus side those 5870 vapour chillz are nice /wink

Yeah just managed to do it again- I've been working a lot in Unreal Editor and 3DS Max for uni recently- ran UE for around 5 mins and it did the gfx glitch and locked up again.... so guessing its new card time

Which puts me in a dilemma.... do I buy something £100~ for this rig to last me til my deadlines are over (and then buy a complete new i7/awesome rig in may/june- and the current cards will be cheaper...) or do I buy an awesome card that I could carry over to my new rig?

@jorzeh yeah those 5870s do look good... anyone know how they perform in 3DS Max/Unreal? I heard (a while ago, granted) that ati cards have problems with the viewports etc?

If you don't need a new card to play the latest games and your happy with that cards performance, you could try and save yourself some wonga and just shove it in the oven!

No Joke... LINKY!
Not specifically for the 8800 but there are several threads about it. just can't find any at the mo.

Edit: Even found a video for you!

Unreal tournament 3 runs like lightning on my 4870x2 and there around the same performance so the 5870 should totally fly (also all the older UT games play perfect and unreal engine based games in genreal.

I could not tell you about the 3DS max but i'm sure someone would be able to tell you Gl with which ever card you buy m8. :)

To be honest there is no reason why this wouldn't work, as the theory is similar to fixing the RROD on the Xbox 360. Its something to do with poor connection on some of the GPU solder points.

The oven is only a temporary fix for faulty solder connections. It will only last a few months, I dont think it actually fixes the issue and the G80's do have a high failure rate. If you need the graphics processing for Uni I would start looking at possible replacements as you don't want it to fail and make it difficult to complete your studies.

Cheers for the help guys.

Regarding RMA- its near my uni deadlines so I really need my pc up and running, that said I might look at it as an option if I can find my receipt. The card is pretty old though (could be about 2yrs)

I purchased a HD 5750 today on the basis that I needed a new card to finish off my work and that it would carry me over until the latest nvidia cards are out/others have come down in price.

Everything seems to be going ok so far. Will look into RMA/oven stuff for the 8800 so I have a back up if needs be.

Whos the manufacture of the card?

Also i ovened a 7900GTX which went bad and 2 years later shes still working in a mates rig. So it can be a pernament fix.
