I am pretty annoyed at the moment with Asus. Check this mobo's spec..

Check anywhere online in reviews and even on the Asus website and you will see that it states it has 3 x pci-e @ 16.

Now it is not until you look into this and check manuals etc that you will notice its not 3 x pci-e @ 16.

The 3rd pci-e will not run at 16. If you use slots 2 & 3 you can have them at 16-1 or 8-8. You cannot have 1-16. So basically slot 3 CANNOT run at 16.

I found this out when I was trying to run 2 gfx cards 1 in slot 1 and 1 in slot 3.

Bloody annoying.

That's why it's a different colour. The manual will also instruct you to use the top ones for GFX.

This is more a limitation of the X58 chipset, not Asus telling you wrong. If you'd done your research you would have known this before you bought it.

That slot may well run at 16x when it is the sole one populated, though you'll have to check the board has this 'hardwired'. It may not, the manual should tell you.

When it says pci-e x16, it's referring to the fact that they're the same physical size and can take gfx cards, rather than the bandwidth of the slot, though typically these go hand in hand, but not necessarily.

False advertising is not the appropriate description.

Well maybe the term false advertising is a bit far but simple fact is the manual might state what it can do but a products desciption on sites should not state its 3 x pci-e @ 16 ( QUOTE THE @ incase you missed that simple little indicator before ) when infact 1 of the slots does not run @ ( o look its the indicator again... and yes indicator refering to running @ or bandwidth ) 16.

As for research well I always do my research and to be honest its not an issue I just thought I would try the 1st and 3rd to keep temp of my vid cards down.

Bottom line is if sites are going to put specs up for this board it should not use @ for the 3rd slot because this indicates the 3rd slot will run at 16 when in fact it cannot go above 8....

To be fair, I've seen quite a few overzealous claims in web pages that the manuals or other technical specifications contradict.

These days I am just glad if the correct information is available somewhere, but it does mean quite a bit of cross checking before purchasing some items :(

Thats not advertising from Asus, its how the retailer has listed the item. Every retailer I use lists items with a few mistakes like this one.

I agree, that's misleading. From Asus's website:
Asus said:
3 x PCIe 2.0 x16 support at x16, x8, x8, or dual x16 speed
That would imply (to me anyway) that any dual card combination (whether in 1&2, 2&3 or 1&3) would run at 16x / 16x. Obviously 1 and 3 is the best situation for Crossfire / SLI as it distances the cards as far apart as possible. I'd be annoyed too actually.

In far less words you have got my point accross far better than I did :)

I would have thought it is common knowledge by now that 16x physical slots =/= 16x electrical?

The bottom slot is probably only rigged for 8x electrical. A good review should point this out or a little dedicated thread trawling.

Personaly I think the R2E has a horrible slot layout if your air cooling (R3E is much better). The slots are the first thing I look at for MB's so that they could fit 2x VGA plus a sound card with decent air gaps.
