Maybe a stupid a question, but i'm a bit new to contracts so i thought i'd best ask. Would it be possible for o2 to unlock the current 3G (for free), sell it, buy a newer iphone and honour the rest of the contract on that sim at any time?

Just wanted to know where i stand with upgrades, etc

Cheers, Rich

You could sell your current 3G, then use that money towards the new iPhone when it's released on pay and go, then put your contract sim in

well all iphones are unlocked now anyway, and if they were locked you can unlock them officially (this is due to o2;s iphone contract no longer being around) :

you can only do what you plan (sell , buy and swap) if your new iphone is on payg.

basically you have realised that the new phone is about to be released and want in..unfortunately you either brought your phone at the wrong time (ie within the last few months) or have had it for a while that if your lucky it will only be a few months before the contract runs out.

Ah right so you cant just sell, buy and swap then if you're on contract you're saying? I find that slightly odd as i've sometimes used my iphone contract sim in my old phone without issues. Wouldn't it be the same if say i bought a 3GS and put my contract sim in that as well?

Yes you can, I bought a 3G, sold it when the 3GS came out and carried on my contract with the SIM in a PAYG 3GS.

no im not saying that at all, ok say you want a new phone so to get that you have two options payg or contract: if you go contract the phone will be cheaper but you would get a new sim and contract terms (so you effectively would have 2 contracts now)

if you go payg you have to buy the phone outright and yes you can swap sims over with no problems (apart from cloud which you would have to ring o2 up to match your sim with the phone)

at the end of the day your still be spending a lot more just to get a slightly upgraded phone (3g > 3gs), its not worth it.
