Thursday trivia: Number plate location identifiers

its all i can think.

Definitely happens - Dad's new Saab came from the main Exeter Saab dealer but they sourced it from Saab stock. It turned up already registered and it's not a W* registration.

I imagine it's quite common, customer says "I want car xxxx" so the dealer finds something that's already built and registered rather than having to wait for one to be built

Certainly wouldn't explain the MINI, this particular 52 plate was ordered when there was a 6+ month waiting list, before they came out.

There simply wasn't "stock" to move around, let alone specced how we wanted it.

Hang on...MV is Manchester, which would be spot on for a car bought in Wilmslow...no?

well spotted

MV was only middlesex prior to the new style plates

when the new style xx 10 xxx plates came out, MX was for manchester where X was any letter from A to Y

problem solved :D

Mine starts NV which is for Stockton. It was registered by the first owner who lived in Hartlepool. I bought it from a used car dealer in Northumberland. :p

Why would you come all the way up here to sell/part ex with a second hand car dealer!

surely it refers to Stock On Tees near middlesbrough ?

thats what i just said ?

i only added the point it was near middlesbrough as reference to fact it wasnt a place down south !

Hmmmm strange, mine is RV which according to that list makes it Portsmouth originated but I know the car was registered in Walton on Thames in Surrey.

Duh, what a muppet I am. Thanks for pointing that out. Even so Reading is a fair trek from Walton on Thames.

depends where the nearest DVLA office is. Reading is obviously the nearest one. As a comparison, leicester doesnt have one and all leicester cars are registered in Nottingham.

Even stranger since I'd have thought London or Brighton would be much closer. Ah well. Interesting stuff anyway.

never knew this for sure but thought there was something about it. AVE was a particularly common ending growing up around cambridge, noticeable for S AVE, R AVE, unfortunately very few D AVE or I'd have snapped one up.

I do remember being told about this years ago, just never given it any thought tbh!

Just to make sure I'm not being stupid, I'm looking in the "Pre 1999 codes by Town of Issuing Office" list for the MX5 aren't I? And the last two letters are the relevant ones, i.e. Gxxx xPG?

If so, that states Guildford. It hasn't come far then :) I have no idea where the first owner bought it from :D

I assume the same list applies for my Accord, which is a W plate. Wxxx xLE = NW London. Not far then! Again, no idea where the original owner lived, I'll have a look at the paperwork later and see if it's got any info!
