NEW CAR SALES UP 26% Bullish Jaguar And Land Rover lead March resurgence

because last time i looked even the indian manufacturer used locally sourced parts from suppliers here and employed workers here

The unions would be banging on number 10s door if they let car production here go to the dogs.

Its the unions which are causing manufactures to turn and run from this country in the first place. Lets not get onto this debate, and just be thankful that at least someone wanted to buy LandRover/Jag.

It does't handle as nice as the 5 series, rolls more in the bends .. how does it feel "better"?

But it is higher... You can't deny many people like sitting high in their cars. One might like sitting as close to the road as possible, another wants to sit high, or one might like both and change between them.
Handling isn't something all people care about.

Why would you want to sit as high as possible? It is by far the crappiest driving position

Physiological thing... People like to look down on things. And perceived safety.
I know it feels nice for me to take a drive in my dad's car once in a while and actually sit a little bit higher than in mine, and that's not an SUV, an SUV would feel even nicer as a change.

Its nice to see over cars - for example on a motorway in a long row of cars you can see where cars in front are braking and prepare yourself rather than heaving on the anchors when the bloke in front does.

Its also nice to see over hedges out in the sticks on narrow roads to see cars approaching.

Contrary to popular Motors forum belief, not everyone wants a car which can set the fastest possible time from A to B with a racecar like driving position.

I thought this, then I drove a X5, X3, Q5, Q7, ML, Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and Porsche Cayenne GTS.

I can see the appeal, its not called command driving position for nothing.

Great, so now we're making the Indians richer. Why can't we hold on to just one mass-market manufacturer in this country :(

The UK has moved much more towards high tech high end manufacture and engineering. I dont really see this as a bad thing.

In any case JLR havent been in british hands for a long time, why are you moaning now?

edit - also the amount of tech and innovation in JLR vehicles recently is pretty awesome, they're no run of the mill vehicles.

It's called not sitting in the middle of the lane, I always sit to the right of my lane so that I can always see just a bit past the car ahead, problem solved.

And sitting high up is still the crappiest position, the nicest driving position is as low to the ground as possible.

Like you'd know. You've probably not even driven an X5. Or indeed anything else from the way you prattle on as if you love in some sort of parallel universe.

I haven't just started moaning now. I've been moaning for years about this. Over the years this country has had dozens of great British motor manufacturers: Austin, Bentley, Jaguar, Hillman, Humber, Lotus, MG, Morris, Riley, Rolls Royce, Rover, Singer, Sunbeam, Standard, Triumph, TVR, Vauxhall, Wolseley to name but a few.

You've only got to look as far as the Classic Le Mans to appreciate just how much of the car industry originated in the UK back through history. Yet for whatever reason, we've lost ownership of the lot bar a few exceptions (most notably, and recently Aston Martin), whilst the French, the Germans, the Japanese and the Americans have all retained theirs.

Now I'm very grateful to BMW/Ford/Tata from preventing the LandRover brand from disappearing altogether, but as has already been rightly pointed out, they are still designed and manufactured here by local people, using local suppliers. So why can't they be owned locally? Most importantly why can't the profits they make stay within this little over-populated island? It makes me mad

I don't need to drive an X5, I've driven other SUV/CUV things and dislike the experience

Sitting up high has lots and lots of benefits as i'm sure other drivers of large vehicles will tell you.
The main and most important one being that it allows you to see over the top of cars and read the road ahead more easily.

Well I guess nothing can compare to driving around in a Celica that escaped the scrappage scheme. Remember, every car you dont like is crap.
Rather that than a boring 5 series.
Besides it's going in a few weeks to be replaced by something better

Never had a problem reading the road in a low slung sports car such as my old MR2

Yup, very boring, what with a better chassis, better drivetrain, more power. More examples of exactly what I mean. Your opinions are only ever totally extreme and baseless. Not even just on cars, I cringe watching you post in threads on politics wondering when, rather than if, you are going to seriously suggest something like murdering everyone on benefits and think its actually a credible idea.

Just... tone it down. Nothing wrong with strong opinions but when they are so utterly bizarre and misguided something is wrong. Do you never wonder why you are always the lone voice on a certain side? Never have you at least one other person agreeing with you. Do you never ask yourself why that could be?

You've pretty much written off an entire segment of cars you know nothing about and branded them all as crap when it contains some hugely competent vehicles. I'm not really an SUV fan either, I wouldnt buy an X5, but crucially I can put myself in other peoples position and can understand why some people might.

Whats all the more galling is that you actually DO what everyone on this forum accuses me of - you are unable to see anything from anyones perspective but your own. Just because YOU wouldnt want a Discovery 4, its totally crap. Great. Useful input, nice one.

Didn't say you had a problem I said it makes it easier.
Some people like being able to see ahead of them easier so they go out and buy a car with a high seating position rather than your old MR2.
