driving around in a Celica

Rather that than a boring 5 series.

5 series just too heavy and underpowered for that weight to be fun

Errrr, correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't fox his car have a higher bhp/ton ratio than your celica  ?

Don't get me wrong I love Celica's even your model, and I don't specifically like fox's 530i ( don't really like sporty suspension, I'd rather have nice and soft bounce absorbing suspention), but I'm pretty sure his car is in pretty much every way superior to yours, be it in being fun ( boring ?) or comfort... Well except perhaps price of course, iirc you got it for something like 600 or 700 quid ( EDIT 550 quid :)) ?

I haven't just started moaning now. I've been moaning for years about this. Over the years this country has had dozens of great British motor manufacturers: Austin, Bentley, Jaguar, Hillman, Humber, Lotus, MG, Morris, Riley, Rolls Royce, Rover, Singer, Sunbeam, Standard, Triumph, TVR, Vauxhall, Wolseley to name but a few.

You've only got to look as far as the Classic Le Mans to appreciate just how much of the car industry originated in the UK back through history. Yet for whatever reason, we've lost ownership of the lot bar a few exceptions (most notably, and recently Aston Martin), whilst the French, the Germans, the Japanese and the Americans have all retained theirs.

Now I'm very grateful to BMW/Ford/Tata from preventing the LandRover brand from disappearing altogether, but as has already been rightly pointed out, they are still designed and manufactured here by local people, using local suppliers. So why can't they be owned locally? Most importantly why can't the profits they make stay within this little over-populated island? It makes me mad

Happy that you cleared that one up, thought you were just one of them keyboard warriors who spout one line and thats it.

I know what you mean, but we're on one little island, assembly line workers being backed by an overly strong union, for Ford especially (and I know they're american), there were cost savings to be made by not using british labour, and moving to mainland Europe countries. There's still a healthy motor manufacture industry here with Toyota, VX etc, but nowhere near as much as before. It's a shame, but down to costs. If there was a supercheap way to get the cars made in China and shipped over, I'm sure the US would start moving plants over there slowly. But they're in the middle on their own, however the fact that Ford will be using their plant in Mexico instead of US plants for the Fiesta.... could be the start of a shift over there too.

Ownership, is another story! Bad decisions, buying power etc.

SUVs have 2 uses, carrying tools and being and off-roader. If you want "Sport" you get a sports car, if you want luxury you get a barge.

Rubbish, ok so it is your opinion, which is fair enough ...but you state it like it's some sort of known fact!

I quite like driving trucks and SUV's ...the X5 in particular is quite nice to drive, even after driving a 5 series ...sure I prefer a car but it's a different experience. I quite like being high up, it is strangely empowering in a way.
