6 Tickets for a no right turn

My mate was telling me last night that he had received 6 tickets for doing right turns when he shouldn't be.

When he travels to work he told me he likes to avoid the traffic by going a back way around the houses and there is one bit where he pulls left out of a side road and then immediately does a right turn into another side road. This side road in question has a time restricted no right turn rule meaning you can't do a right turn into the road at certain times on certain days (the times also vary by day bizarrely). He says he never noticed the small sign as once he pulls out of the side road he has to do the right turn straight away, which means he doesn't have time to notice the sign and cctv camera.

Obviously now he has received the 6 fines within a few days of each other, he has gone back and seen that there is a sign there telling him he can't do the right turn and obviously doesn't do it anymore to avoid further fines.

I personally find it very harsh that he has been fined 6 times, would he have a leg to stand on in getting some of the fines dropped, he has tried appealing but the council has said it's tough luck so he'd have to take it to court.

edit/ I should point out that the sign isn't one of the big obvious red bordered circles with an arrow and a diagonal line through it, it's just a small white sign with the times and days written on it.

The sign was there every day, so I imagine he'll have to swallow it. Continuing to commit the offence until someone actually writes to you / stops you is not going to be a strong backbone of any defence.

Surely if this is a regular commute he should have noticed a difference, i.e. a sign and a CCTV camera being erected?

hmm that sign WOULD be very easy to miss if you're focusing on gettin accross to the outside lane, especially combined with the fact it's so far from the turning AND on the left, not the right, in a very plain manner..

True, also reading that news article it says normally the automatic barriers that only open for buses weren't working so they were down all the time even though you aren't allowed to drive down there.

Small white sign, no further signage on the right turn itself - only automatic barriers.

To be honest I'd assume if the barriers were down it was okay to pass. Would getting a good lawyer be worth it in this case?

Your friend needs to find out if the signs adhere to the correct standards and if required the local authority have the correct approval to use them. Considering how small it is I would expect something to be wrong with it which would mean the fines can not be enforced. Get your friend to join www.pepipoo.com and ask for advice.

The positioning of the sign is appalling. Right behind the lights of a pedestrian crossing meaning it would be quite easy for someone to miss.

I would appeal that, showing them photos of it, and screenshots of the google maps.

No idea if it would get anywhere, but that is shocking!

What's wrong with using the sign above and then the white sign below it. That sign is on it's own is ****!

That is shocking, surely if the sign was orignally to be used with the automatic bollards then doesn't the fact that the bollards aren't working mean something?

This is as bad as the some of the flip-signs that they have in Wembley, you could have parked legally but during the day the sign can be flipped meaning it's not illegal to park so you end up getting a ticket.
