Why I hate apple...

So, 2 weeks ago I took my iPhone 3G S in to be repaired. It had a fault with the silent/loud switch. The switch was loose and it would essentially only stay on loud regardless of switch position but the phone would switch to silent infrequently and at a random. This is, of course, extremely annoying if you spend most of your time in libraries revising. Anyway, I gave it in and thought great, I'll just have to wait two weeks and I will have my iPhone back working again.

Fast forward two and a half weeks: I have heard nothing back from Apple or O2 about the state of my iPhone, which I thought was strange given that they said they would have it back in two weeks. I go into the shop to enquire and they spend 10 minutes going through their files to come back to me and say it is still at the apple repair shop and there is a quotation for fixing water damaqe.

I say 'there must be some mistake, I wanted the catch repaired. I wasn't experiencing any issues due to water damage.'

'No mistake. You can look at the report right here.' He shows me a picture (dated 1.5 weeks ago) of my iPhone and a little red circle in the power connector slot below the connector. 'This tells the technician that there is water damage.'

'But I have never dropped my phone in water'

'Well, if you use it on a rainy day -'

'You're telling me I can't use my phone when it's raining..... I don't think that measuring water on an external part of the device is representative of whether there is water damage within it. All I want fixed is the switch, I am not experiencing any issues from 'water damage' so I am happy with that'

'Yes sir, but Apple only fix in warranty problems after all out-of-warranty ones have been fixed'

'You are ******* kidding me'

'Look, it will cost £460 for you to buy a new iPhone but you can pay £139 and we will give you a new iPhone'

'Don't act like you are giving me a good deal. I would rather.....':mad:

The rest of the conversation gets a little rude. And yes, I know, being rude never helped anyone but I was just so annoyed about being taken for a ride.

The point is it is such a racket. I would wager that almost every iPhone has this little red mark on it since everyone uses their phone in the rain and perhaps has it in the bathroom while they have a shower or... has it in the kitchen when they are boiling water...

I wasn't the only one there surprised about being told their phone had water damage. I heard the guy talking to someone on the phone right before me who, from side of the conversation I could hear, seemed pretty ****ed off.

The point is apple will never have to repair anything under warranty because someone comes in with something that would be covered under warranty, they declare it has water damage and ask for £140.

I can't understand why they couldn't design, oh I don't know, a piece of rubber that would go in the power connector slot when you aren't using it to prevent this. Oh wait, I can, they are a deeply immoral company.

fairly common this "water damage" not just on apple phones either.
i think the red circle detector things are far to sensitive to moisture in the air

Same problem is on my Iphone, I just turned the volume off in settings like you would on any other phone.

Knew it would be something like water damage so didn't bother trying to say it was anything else :)

Sorry that they stiched you, should have argued that you should have been contacted before any work was undertaken not that you had to pay for the work done.

Why would you assume that it was water damage? It would seem more likely that it is material fatigue. Definitely with mine anyway, since the catch was loose.

I didn't actually pay (they hadn't fixed it). I told them to stuff it but the problem now is I will get my phone back still semi-broken. I probably should have paid but I resent paying £140 for something that should be fixed under warranty and I am not really gaining anything by getting a new iPhone because apart from some light scratching on the back mine looked new.

Same reason they wouldn't replace which is covered in cracks, it's been water damaged but I have no idea how that's happened. Seems the 'immersion indicators' are way too sensitive.

As said, its not just Apple, it's an excuse used by every network provider or mobile phone manufacturer that I have come across. Total scam to use an internal colour changing sticker to determine warranty fixes.

Should have gone straight to an apple store.

Had excellent service there and my phone replaced on the spot twice now (Back with a 2G, 3GS is fine, although I think my silent switch is going the same way as yours now)...

Mines in a case so shouldn't have any issues with them suggesting its water damaged. Ask for it back and go straight to an apple store TBQFH.

I would never take my phone to an o2 store. I've had a couple of iPhone swaps and each time I've gone into an Apple store where they've swapped it on the spot.

Yup, me too. Their in-store customer service is excellent IMHO. I had 4 3G's replaced, yup thats right - four!

Original phone had dust under the screen (1 spot), replacement lost network (2months later) and refused to find it again, its replacement had loose vibration motor (noticed day I got it home), and its replacement had extremely stiff silent switch (noticed in-store when being issued), so bad it was almost impossible to engage!

Staff couldn't have apologised any more for the inconvenience, and replaced each time without question.

Current one has been going strong since (almost 18 months now). Were it to develop a fault, I would have no hesitation of taking it back to the store.

If I were in your position I would take the phone to an Apple store and have very strong, but VERY POLITE words with the manager. Suggest that it is nonsense to refuse a repair on a switch because there is a suggestion of water ingress.

And I would be arguing the point that it cannot be fit for purpose if you cannot answer the damn thing when it's raining outside!! :D:p

Where is this little red dot again? I've never dropped it in water, but did accidently manage to drop it in a bowl of spaghetti and meatballs last week :/

Don't worry, it's only a moisture detector. I don't think apple put in a spag'balls detector.

I think it's just inside the dock connector.

Yep, going into a mobile phone store with your handset for repair is just asking for trouble. It's like walking into a room filled with electricity cold calling salesmen. They'll always try to screw you.

Apple's store's are really good imo. I've only been twice - to get a present gen ipod nano sleep switch sorted and on both occasions they just gave us a new one after a breif one second glance at it.

Oh and as for the red dot, I can't for the life see the sod on my 3G! It's apparently meant to be visible to the nekkid eye within that headphone socket.

Can't understand why anyone would want to take their phone into the bathroom while they shower.

My boss always took his iPhone to Apple store and each time they replaced his phone without any questioning.
All other phone companies outlets are scums!

I took my Tmobile G1 on to Valhalla at Blackpool, despite trying to protect it the phone was drenched. Dried it out, plugged it in to charge and it came up with an error.

Took it to shop, told them it had just stopped working when plugging it in and could they fix it. Done on warranty :D
