My contract is up in the next month and I'm trying to figure out what is going to replace it. I'm still trying to figure out whether I'm going to go iPhone or not, but to do that I need to know what is the best Android competition to compare. Isn't the Nexus One due out soon? Is that the best device or should I look at some new HTC model?

Any help is appreciated :)

The Nexus One was out in Jan. The HTC Desire is out now (hardware is the same as Nexus One). These are the best Android phones out at the moment.

Currently out you have the choice between

HTC Desire (HTC Sense)
Google Nexus One (Vanilla Android)

There are always a few phones on the horizon, but nothing major (from what I can remember) is coming out within the next two months.

Despite what has been said above, the Desire and Nexus One are not the same phone, just very, very similar. There are a few differences (eg trackball vs mousepad, noise cancellation, Sense UI) that should be factored in before choosing one over the other.

I don't think there is anything else that is as well specced on the horizon except the Samsung Galaxy S that was only announced last week and without a release date. I doubt this will be available anywhere in the next two months.

Which out of the two would you suggest?

x10 ? should have 2.1 within the next few months. even without it its pretty damn great... dont know why HTC manage to mess up cameras so badly everytime

Could you list the pros and cons? I'd want the phone to last as long as possible (tech wise).

These are the reasons I choose the Desire over the N1:

Pro's

Optical Trackball
Extra RAM (once Andorid is able to see it, fix in development)
Easily Available
Cheaper

Cons

Nexus will get updates to OS quicker as they come direct from Google

I haven't really thought about it before as I'm stuck with my Hero for a while.

With the Nexus One you are guaranteed immediate access to the newest Android firmware, with the Desire HTC will take longer as they have to balance any update release against the time it takes to get Sense working and their commercial concerns (eg I'm fairly sure the Hero could have Android 2.1 now if HTC wanted it to, but that would eat into the sales of the Legend which is essentially a faster Hero). Also warranty can be handled directly by HTC and you don't have to go through Google's nonexistant customer service department.

I just had a look and the Desire has an FM radio (though it might not be working yet), optical trackball, 64mb more RAM and Sense UI which I also like. I'd pick the Desire for these reasons.

Ok, so my next question, what is the best network and price plan for the desire? I'm currently with Voda, I'd like 500+minutes, not too fussed about texts, 18month contract, but ideally unlimited internet. I know most packages have 500MB of internet use only, how have you guys got around that?

It's the other way round is it not? The Nexus has a FM radio that isn't working yet, but the Desire has one that is.

At above, T-Mobile i'd say. Depends on how much you want to spend per month? All their smartphone plans have unlimited internet with a 1GB fair usage policy, unlimited texts (or another booster) and x minutes. The desire is free from £35/m

I'd like £30 per month on an 18month contract, I've heard this is easily achievable with Voda if you haggle.

Its a 3GB FUP if you buy direct from T-Mobile.

£30/m for 18 months on T-Mobile can get 600 minutes and £60 for the phone or 900 minutes and £95. As i said before unlimited internet and texts.

Oh, thanks. I thought it was 1GB... time to go crazy with my i5700 :p
