Why are PC game download services so expensive....

That someone isn't getting rich if people not buying it. I really can't see the outrage, we explained reason prices are higher and it's not like we are being held at point black range with a gun and we have to buy from Steam?

True…. I think it’s a principle thing. I’d have maybe expected to save a few quid on not having a box and media, instead its more expensive. It has been explained, doesn’t mean I like the answer though….

To be honest, I’ve got my games now. I’ll just chill out and enjoy my ‘boxed’ retail copies and have some fun..!! lol

Peanuts are more expensive than box and media, there is actually a lot more after service involved with digital downloads than with boxed copies. You buy the game and shops forgets about you, with downloads they need to constantly provide servers to make sure you can log in 24 hours, download servers for initial download and any possible future downloads, automatic updates, customer service, etc.

There are exceptions, like Stalker: Call of Pripyat, which was cheaper on Steam than Amazon and Play.com when it came out (and it still is). Torchlight, too, I notice.

Yes, that was a good deal. But it was only just cheaper than all the £17.99 retail deals that were 2 weeks earlier, with soundtrack CD & art cards.
I bought both, just because I'm a fanboy of that game.

In general, my rule is this :
- New blockbuster release : retail.
- Indie game, special deal : Steam / direct from developer.
- Older blockbuster game : could go either way, depending on price & availability.

If equally priced, I will always choose the retail version, no need to download in future, printed instruction manual (really useful for unfamilier games) artwork etc

it is known that steam takes the biggest cut among all DD services and even developers have mentioned this issue. impulse is usually cheaper.

I think not. There's an article about this, which includes the following quotes:

John Gibson of Tripwire Interactive (Red Orchestra, Killing Floor):
“So, is Valve exploiting independent developers? In short: absolutely not. Without pulling any punches, I can say with certainty that if it weren’t for Steam, there would be no Tripwire Interactive right now.”

Says 2D BOY’s Ron Carmel:
“Valve’s digital distribution agreement is the simplest and most developer friendly agreement I’ve seen so far, and we’ve signed over a dozen of those. Also, no other digital distribution service I know of, PC or console, pays a higher cut of the revenues out to developers.”

Here's the article

Well Settlers 7 DRM wasn't too bad. I had to patch the game BEFORE i could play, UBI Soft force you to update before you can even launch the game, and the patch was 500MB so took me around half an hour to finally get up and running, but its a great game...

I have actually found on place that sells settlers 7 for roughly the same cost as the local store... game.co.uk has a download service and the prices on there aren't too bad...

I noticed this as well £30 for a game of steam and i bought bioshock 2 deliverd for £18.. a lot of games are better just to buy from retailers a lot give free delivery n only take 2 business days..

A digital download service costs far, far, far less to operate than a physical store.

Well to be honest, I think that Steam prices should be roughly the same as retail prices, I am prepared to pay slightly more for the convenience (couple of quid) but I don't see why Steam game prices are £35 when the same game can be purchased on the high street for £25.

Tbh I always buy the boxed version if I can, much prefer it.

The only download service I have used much is gamersgate set hobby paradox.
I like them as they are very supportive of niche developers (and paradox games are great)
