The Grand National

I work in a bookies. Mon Mome is 2nd Fav, ran very well at Cheltenham. Placing a bet is relatively easy, especially on GN. They make "quick slips" for betting newbs and will have staff out on the shop floor :)
Back an outsider on E/W :) - Going to have a punt on "State of Play" this year.

What places are you paying for E/W on the National?

I think the on-course bookies were paying up to 4th or 5th last year

looks like your a bit of an expert, any tips/predictions for this year?

how did you know to pick mon momme? as i said previously he was a huge outsider

Had the stamina, just needed a little luck on the day and got it. Only challenger was Comply or Die and he was held up nicely until the final push.

My pick is Black Apalachi. High in the weights but was tanking along last year when he decided to give his jockey a nudge south and his race was done. Stamina's not a problem and can run a big race if in the front few at the half-way mark.

Mon Mome would be 20/1 or so if he hadn't have come 3rd at Cheltenham. He finished like a train in the Gold Cup (and thats over 3m 2f) but was a LONG way behind the rest.

I won't deny I'm an expert at picking good horses for the national, but this expertise is called 'Pure Luck' :D:D:D

General hunch and spreading my bets over a variety of horses. As it's the National there will be fallers, and plenty of good horses that will get caught up in the antics of others. If a horse can last the distance and jump well then it's worth a punt.

Looking forward to tomorrow, just need to hold back although will probably spread about £40-50 across a variety of stallions.

The mere mention of the word fallers makes me panic already. :D

Snap! £25 ew.

And £5 ew on Niche Market.

£25 ew on state of play so thats £50 in total, thats a bit more than a punt lol, to bet £50 on something which requires more luck than skill is crazy. ive bet £25 altogether on 2 horses.

£10 - state of play to win
£5 - state of play to come 1-4th
£10 - black apalchi (£5 to win and £5 to come 1-4th)

so im hoping he wins too, but if he dont it wont hurt me as much, ive only bet this year because of my mate who won last year, otherwise i have never bet on horses and this is probably the only race that i ever will put a bet on a yearly basis.

you always get people who phone the radio stations the next day saying they have won it 5 times in a row. etc, etc. i cant believe how thats possible on such a tricky race.

My dad knows absolutely everything there is to know about horse racing and his last winner was Lord Gyllene in 1997.

Paddy Power is 5 places. I think it's a good bet and I'm up on Paddy boy anyway. :D

I had about 5 other horses that fell last year at varying intervals. Was soo down and out that I forgot i had even placed my £2.50 EQ on Mon Momme.

It wasn't until after the last fence that one of the guys I was with said 'Adam don't you have that Mon Momme'.

I hurt my voice in the following minutes :D

Love the national, well worth a little flutter!

i would have thought betting on that many horses with such low odds wouldnt be a good idea, even if you do win, your basically just doubling your money

Tricky Trickster and Black Apalachi are good bets. I usually do 2-3 bets e/w on the more favourite horses, then £1 on the nose for anything 100-1 and above. Best win was £2500 from £50 on Maori Venture at 50-1, wasnt going to bet on it, but my mate who is a maori put on £500 so i thought it might be worth a flutter. Was quite funny when we both went into the bookies to pick up our winnings, there was a decent gasp when i picked up my winnings, people started cheering when he picked up his! :D

ditto :D

Our company took us to Kempton Park a couple of years ago, the first horse I bet on kicked off the jockey when they were going to the start so was pulled out of the race and the second then fell at the last hurdle. Doh!

But... as soon as I actually read the little leaflet I won a couple and also a bottle of champagne as work did a sweepstake and the horse next to my name won :D

Everyone thought I was drunk because I got so excited about it.

I'm trying to place bets on betfair but it's saying its suspended

did they even have £25,000 in cash?

Vic Venturi looks like a good bet at 25/1. It's won a couple of races in the last 12 months, including one at Aintree.

Wow, not much chat in here really considering the race is only tomorrow. Just got my bet on but will be making another at the course tomorrow. In the tattersall enclosure. Anyone else? First time i've been.
