Well, ive had my Desire all day and im really chuffed with it, its a great phone.

So far i only have one gripe, my old phone was a crappy Nokia, nothing special and i live out in the country where my Nokia would receive 1 bar in most places around the house, enough to have SMS convo's.

My HTC desire does not, im having serious trouble trying to send a single SMS. i get 1 or 2 bars suddenly, hit send, i think the message has sent then 5 minutes later i get a failure message as the reception dropped off...

is there an app that will let me send sms through wifi?

ANother problem with Android.

It seems if you dont setup your gmail account as soon as you switch it on (for the first time) it locks you out of it.

You have to factory reset the handset and put in your google details the first time it asks you!

grr.. just spent hours configuring it... hope ALL my settings are backed up.

Well, it seems the Desire does not support UMA, which the what enables a phone to make and receive calls and sms through wifi.

Blackberry and LG have this function.

i love the desire but this makes me think about returning it.

:(

No you dont... Didnt set mine up for a few days and works fine.

As for network - seems better than my older Samsung Pixon to me....

Its a bug, doesnt seem to affect everyone, when i looked on the android forums it has affected a lot of people on various handsets but not all.

Seems a bit suspect that a lot of people cannot link their gmail to their phone unless they input the details first time they switch the handset on!

its all sorted now though, the forums were right as soon as i did a hard reset my gmail linked up no problems.

Still a great phone, my problem with reception is could maybe be down to the weather, as i only do get one or two bars dodgy weather can sometimes knock it off... i guess i should move back into the city!

As I said above, I get BETTER reception on my Desire than I did on my Pixon and it had a ruddy great antenna block about 1 inch wide the entire length of the phone (bottom edge)

I think its more another problem with smartphones in general, there just isn't enough room inside for proper antennas with all the other tech thats squeezed in!

It's more that older nokias etc (especially some of the really old ones like the 6310i) were so far above the required signal sensitivity it was insane. They would pick up signal just about anywhere, regardless of how many other phones struggled.

The fact that more and more transmitters are being refused (including replacements for existing ones) doesn't help matters either.
