Nvidia misses GTX470/480 launch targets

I bet these cards wont be the most reliable ever made either.....I'm fully expecting stories of cards going wrong shortly after some are put to real world use...

With the heat and power factor, you'd be crazy to buy a first gen 4xx card....

i agree with the first line but under water they might be good but they to expensive

This has been already been posted before but was taken down to people not behaving!

Heres hoping this thread stays well behaved!

Seems a shame to me :( If there were less issues, or if NV did an early dry run like ATI did with the 4770 we may well be in a different position here today. Hopefully they learn something from this, tweak their processes and come back strong. With us yet to see the mid-range there may still be a few surprises... 8800gt anybody? Here is to hoping.

I'm certainly looking forward to the GTS 450, i don't expect it to be blazingly fast but i want to switch back to Nvidia for their OpenGL drivers and CUDA. As long as it's a decent amount faster than my 4850 and the heat/power are tamed then i'll grab one right away most likely.

One thing i do hope is that there are some GTS 450's with 2gb RAM. Not sure if that will happen right away but seeing as they released 250's with that much they will hopefully do the same for the 450.

I think if they manage to excel anywhere this series it will be on the mid-range. I havent seen any performance figures but have a feeling that they will compete well and not be much more expensive.

Given that at the same performance level as their ati counterparts the cores are roughly 30-40% bigger, whatever glasses you are looking through its going to be tough for them to compete on price but those binned cores may just have a few little gems in there.

I wonder why they haven't given up on the monolithic die strategy? It's killing them in the consumer space... but maybe it'll be amazing when shrunk and tweaked.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the purpose of Fermi was to bring a more modular architecture to chip design? They had problems making mainstream versions of the GT200 chips, hence part of the reason for the redesign.

Unfortunately they aren't just 30-40% bigger, from the specs being talked about, the ratio of Rop's/shaders is actually quite a bit higher on their midrange cards, which would actually suggest they are cutting quite a small amount of core logic as they cut down shaders. That would mean a not very good size reduction in terms to power drop.

If 25% of the 480gtx is core logic and 75% is shaders, cut the shaders in half, down to 37.5% of the die space, but if you've got a similar amount of core logic and rop numbers, you could be at 15-20% core logic and you're at a core thats over half the size of the Fermi, which will be some 50-60% bigger than AMD's 5770 most likely.

Even worse is, their midend probably has the proper 40nm fixes in, which is increase via's (two instead of 1 everywhere, higher yields as failures won't always cause a problem anymore, infact far less often), and a little leeway built into the design for the varying transistor size inherant to TSMC's crappy process. Those are the two things TSMC have certainly not fixed, that are mostly responsible for low yields. THe big problem is the fixes added some 10-15% die size to AMD's 40nm chips, if their mid end is already 60% bigger than AMD's, and it add's the fixes in, you're looking at something thats actually Cypress sized, with worse yields(as Ghz issue hasn't changed, high speed is a BIG problem on this process).

I've been saying for over a year now, Nvidia HAVE to have a small die design to compete with AMD.

the 285gtx, the 260gtx, they were all quite easily faster than AMD's offerings, not hugely, but pretty obviously faster most of the time, and yet Nvidia struggled with lower yields, higher cost and big die size and lost market share due to prices. Its worse this generation and it will get even worse once AMD move to GloFo, they are going to make a monumental loss o their high end chips, their mid end chips won't make that much profit in all likelyhood and the very low margin on low end, probably won't be big either.

I'd rather wait for the 5890.

it will just be a slightly upclocked version. The "fix" that took a 4870 to a 4890 and increased its overclocking potential, is part of the fundamental design now. A respin of this chip at this stage is possible, but not hugely likely as theres really not much they can do to it.

Right now a 5850 gives you pretty much 5870 -5% performance if they can go clock for clock with each other, they can very likely overclock exactly as far as a 5890 or a pre-overclocked 5870 can go anyway. Just buy a 5850 basically, or wait for a 6 series card. Though exactly how much of an improvement they can get on a inbetween gen design, on the same 40nm process that can't take a whole lot more shaders without getting out of control in terms of power, is questionable.

The 6 series could potentially be the smallest performance bump ever in terms of a new "generation" of cards, as the idea of doubling shaders to 3200 on this 40nm process, seems laughable. I think the 6 series will only be hurt by a 5890 clocked 20% higher, as the new cards will seem 20% slower compared to a theoretical 5890, as opposed to a stock 5870.

A few tweaks, new uncore, and 1/3 to 1/2 increase in shaders instead of the usual doubling of base power due to being stuck on 40nm. Expect that to be quickly replaced by a 28nm new generation the second its viable(as a bigger 5870 will have lower yields and higher power, less profit and not be particularly great performance wise).

Even more so a 5850 overclocked within an inch of its life is the best card to have, until a 7xxx card is introduce on 28nm, or until Nvidia provide something at 28nm aswell.

all this big mess is making amd put their prices up even further , the new sapphire 5850 vapor x is at 260 odd now, wtf is going on this year, I honestly cant say its worth buying any cards over 150 quid atm, sad times for graphics cards till nvidia can get a good chip out that has availablility. I loved the times when you could pick up an ati card cheap as they were the "bang for buck" compared to the nvidia options, now they are charging what they like as theres no competition. Im all for a good battle between friends over brands etc but its no fun anymore :o id like an upgrade to the 5770's next month for my birthday but trying to explain to the wife why i need 500 quid for more power wont go down well lol. anyway, morning rant over ;)
