ps3 other os - refundings

I have used it, not on my ps3, but i have used the functionality before. Only due to me not using maya this year at uni has that altered anything.

Secondly, you have NO idea what I do or don't do. So don't act like you know.

We do know though.

We've been watching you for weeks.

Can you even run Maya on a PS3?

Unless something has changed recently, didn't think you could?

Would be of use to me, but think the Other OS Feature is far too locked down.

I've bought mine from Gamestation in Nottingham and I did use the Linux feature although I used it a couple of times. Would there be a chance with them and what should I say as I want to give them a ring.

fudged if I know! unfortunatly. Gave some work to a mate who wanted to mess with mental ray (damn programmers)

I'm a hunting the googles now though :)

edit: he did have 4 ps3's going by the way.

Edit:

Aside from installing Linux, the key is to acquiring a render engine. Examples are Mental Ray and Pixar's Renderman. I would highly suggest that you stick with Mental Ray as 1) Modern versions of Maya come with it and 2) Pxiar's Renderman is incredibly complex.

You'll need a version of Mental Ray called, "Mental Ray Standalone". Once installed, there are many resources available for configuring Mental Ray Standalone and for connecting to it via Maya.

That's actually really cool. Might dig out my 160GB PS3 and mess around with Linux on it.

Funny how it took them to remove the feature for most people to bother with it :D

Will need to save some pennies me thinks :p

Thanks.

No problem, Hopefully this will highlight why some people used the ps3, and why some people are angry due to the update.

Sony touted the ps3 as a super computer, a MAJOr selling point to people. They rammed it home how powerful it was. It can't be anymore.

Wasn't that in relation to the games though? Linux isn't something I'd use to show off its power tbh, it's completed gimped. Maybe SETI.

Yeah i've heard about that too, never actually though about how it was done, considering the lock down on hardware. But PS3 clusters do get used in research, etc. Was even talk of them being used by Nasa

The people who used them for research are not affected by this as far as i know, they work with Sony to get some kind of CFW working on the PS3 to aid the research.

Sure there wasnt this much fuss when MS removed the ability to use all but MS memory cards a while back, so something you had paid money for no longer would work? Seems far worse than not being able to use something most user never used and that actually cost you nothing, just seems a bit strange that this has caused so much fuss TBH.

Even though MS have nothing to do with this. What they done was stop unlicensed peripherals working on the X360. The grievance would be between the consumer and someone like Datel who sold the memory cards. Any ways that's all moot due to the recent update.

I would also guess they will not ever update their firmware, I doubt the United States Airforce Research Cluster is interested in connecting to PSN for a quick game of Fifa.

Much ado about nothing IMO

I have never used this feature and have no plans to ever do so. I guess it will only be a few people who have a legitimate claim for compensation.

The cost of (allegedly) preventing piracy. I hope it was worth it for Sony. :)

From my understanding any costs incurred by the retailer if they choose to provide partial refunds would then be passed to Sony.

I can forward my email on to you this evening if you'd like.

Can I have the same please? :)

Email in trust.

Exactly, its pathetic seeing the "oh free moneys" lemmings think they are owed something.

The only thing that is 'pathetic' here is the level of contempt shown by so many towards their rights as a consumer. This isn't about some free for all money-grab - it's about saying Sony, it isn't acceptable for you to remove features from the machine in this way. Our consumer laws provide protection against this, so why shouldn't we execute our right to them?

I'm guessing you don't have a problem when Sony add features with updates and don't ask for money?
