GFX time :) bye bye X1900's :D

Mp4 you should really overclock the Q6600. The chances are the amount of data that stock Q6600 sending over to the 5870 doesn't even go above 50% GPU usage for processing. You need to increase the speed of Q6600 so that data can be sent over to the GPU faster and give them more work to process.

The results may be two months old, but the logic behind it remains the same.

ill see what i can do with the new motherboard im getting tomorrow

Asus P5E3 Pro Intel X48 (Socket 775) DDR3 Motherboard

If you are actually upgrading the motherboard as well, I really think you should just go the extra mile and upgrade to i5 750 Socket 1156 or i7 920/930 Socket 1366 (if you want xfire/SLI support) and sell your Q6600.

Also, I can't find anything on how well would the Q6600 overclock on the Asus P5E3 Pro Intel X48.

i would but i can just afford this alone tbh ... on sickpay atm ..

To be honest even if your Q6600 was overclocked to 3.7GHz, a single 5850 (and overclocking it) would suffices. You simply won't get the full benefit of xfire 5850 paired with a Q6600 even if it was oc to 3.7GHz. You'd need a i5 750 oc to 4GHz or i7 920/930 oc to 4GHz to take full advantage of xfire 5850.

I think you should have a go on overclocking the Q6600 on your current board first instead of getting the Asus P5E3 Pro Intel X48, cause the benefit of it over your current board would probably not worth the extra £103 anyway.

Interesting that even an OC Q6600 at 3.7Ghz still bottlenecks the 5870.. Cheers for that information.

Do what i did. get it delivered when she's not in. Had mine delivered, unwrapped and running before she came home from work. And she still does no....;);)
WOMEN dont understand a mans needs.......

ill try to OC soon :)

Forgot to ask...

The 5870 needs the power connectors to it.. does it really need 2x pcie cables? as i had 2x cards before i just plugged both of them in.

Yes it does. This is because for most cards prior to the dx10 generation does not exceed 75W consumption, which the PCI-E x16 alone would be enough in providing (75W is the max the PCI-E x16 slot able to provide). But the newer cards from that point onward uses more power, therefore they require additional external power...in the form of six/eight pins PCI-E connectors from the PSU.

And yea, go and have a go at the overclocking soon. If your Q6600 is still at stock 2.4GHz, your HD5870 is probably not any faster than a 5750/5770 if I'm honest with you :p

Even if the Q6600 was overclocked to 3.7GHz, it would still not be fast enough to use the 5870 to 100% (Q6600 at 3.7GHz is only roughly as fast as i5 750 at stock speed 2.66GHz), which is why I suggested you should just get a 5850 (and overclock it). But like you said, what's done is done.

Ahh okay glad that power thing is solved :)

I have time to save for an upgrade so the 5870 isn't at a loss atm :)

planning on getting another 5870 in a couple of weeks also (Maybe)
