The Polish president, Lech Kaczynski, and his wife were among 132 people killed when their plane crashed in thick fog on its approach to a regional airport in Russia early this morning.

The governor of the west Russian town of Smolensk confirmed there were no survivors from the Tupulov Tu-154 plane, which came down at 11am (7am GMT) about a mile (1.5km) from Smolensk airport.

I'm at an absolute loss. One of our Polish employees just asked me if I knew about it an I just couldn't believe it. I don't know if I can think of a more devastating thing to a country that's already so demoralised in so many ways...

The Polish government will hold an emergency meeting later today. Officials said the head of the Polish army, the governor of the central bank and the head of the presidential administration were also on board the plane, as well as Kaczynski, his wife and the families of other senior officials.
That's beyond serious, what on Earth are they going to do?!

A terrible thing to happen but I am surprised so many high ranking people within a government were flown on the same plane.

Very sad news indeed.

There was a lot of high ranking people on that flight, talk about putting all your eggs in one basket.

Oh and in before the "omg I'm going on holiday tomorrow I'm scared now" and the armchair pilots come to solve the cause of the crash.

In soviet russia, tree takes you down!

The situation seems very serious in Poland right now, a lot of devasted people. Also the fact they were travelling to a memorial service makes the situation sadder. Hopefully it allow any opposition parties to gain control and ruin anything.

yea wots gonna happen? looks like a lot of the major leaders taken out, sad news

"A government spokesman said that according to the constitution there would be an early presidential election, and the speaker of the lower house of parliament, Bronislaw Komorowski, would become acting president." BBC News

That's must be devastating for Poland, to lose so many high ranking people in one go.

Was it really due to fog though, surly it was the highest skilled military pilots flying and crashed 1.5km from airport.

Sad news but sticking so many important people on one flight was asking for trouble.

Let's hope the right people step up to take control rather than some nut job turning them in to the next big threat.

Who knows? It's all speculation. The real cause will probably be determined once the flight recorders are recovered and analysed.

If they are anything like their lorry drivers his licence was probably free in the local paper. Buy 10 and send away, bingo you can fly a plane or drive a truck.

Are you for real? Poland is an EU member state and one of our closest allies, one of only a handfull of countries to support Britain and the US in sending soldiers to both Afghanistan AND Iraq - how exactly are they going to become the 'next big threat' ?

If anything the 'nut job' was Kaczynski himself (a neo-conservative that most young Poles could not wait to get rid of) and sad as this day is it may in a twisted way prove to be a positive step for Poland. Have to say it is very silly of them to still be flying top people around in ancient Soviet era aircraft though.
