I have had an e-mail from Next, who have taken it upon themselves to not only set up a credit account which I have not agreed to, but to start delivering catalogues to an old address, so they are trying to charge me for them.

What is the relevant law to tell them to stick it where the sun rarely shines?

This happened to me when i was 16. Took a lot of arguing with them before they wrote of the charges. Got no idea how i was signed up for it. Its on my credit rating but hasnt affected it.

Surely the fact you were 16 and not old enough for credit is enough of a reason for them to negate it?

Might want to check your credit and see if anything else has been taken out in your name. Next accounts by default are credit accounts, even when buying online you get a credit account, they pretty much give them to anyone (much like their store card). Have you had any dealings with Next? If you haven't then it sounds suspicious to me.

this happened to me a few years back. I kept getting bills for next catalogues that i didnt have.

phoned up and ranted a little and they cancelled the charges

Did you order anything off the Next website?
If so, when you ticked the little box to confirm that you've read their terms & conditions, you are also agreeing to open a credit account with them....very sneaky.
My other half got caught out with this, be warned!

I had this problem a few years ago and i'm thinking I may have been 17 at the time too. They rang up asking for money I think, told them I had no idea how I had been signed up (we'd received a brochure a few months before) and they cancelled it all.

Seems it wasn't an accident then, maybe they/an affiliate is being a bit underhand...

Doesn't surprise me.

I'm still getting catalogues for my long dead old houseowner despite various e-mails and phone calls there's nothing you can do I also get personalised mails from various supermarkets here in Belgium because I got their cards that give me 2 points per euro which in 10 years I still don't know what they do.. but the bump keeps coming every week :(
