Truecrypt stupidity

I've been using my truecrypt volume for the last few months without any problems, until today when i tried to copy over a large iso. Then it hit, the truecrypt volume was created in FAT not NTFS :mad:

What can I do to salvage the situation? Is it possible to convert to NTFS using the windows convert? Or will i have to copy over ALL the stuff, re-create the truecrypt volume and then copy it back? Google doesnt seem to have the answer, prolly becos nobody has done something so silly before.
 
I think you're going to have to copy-out and then copy-back to be honest. Just make sure when you create the new volume you pay attention to the option where it asks you about saving files over 4GB.
 
<Edit - nonsense remove from my previous post here> - sorry too hungover.. I would copy over manually as above. You can convert regular disks, but I wouldnt risk it with a truecrypt virtual disk

i've made a test container, in FAT. Mounted it, and ran "convert.exe" on it...

it worked!

Thing is... i dont know if i want to try this on my original problem, since it is on an USB Harddrive, and contains around 30gb of important stuff.....

Anybody done this b4?

I'm sure you arrived at that conclusion scientifically :p, but it still leaves a 3% chance that his "important stuff" will vanish without trace. And if you're going to the trouble of imaging the drive, well, you might as well just back the files up in the first place.

Still, as you say, it will probably work... OP, it's your call. Do you feel lucky? :)

True :p but if you do copy everything out somewhere then you need to make sure its securely erased (~ multiple rewrites of the 30gb), otherwise the point of the encrypted container is negated slightly.

Or better yet simply copy them to another Truecrypt volume... in any case, storing a valuable pr0n collection, I mean mission-critical data on an encrypted external USB drive, without a backup, seems like a disaster in the making...

30gb only???? Surely most of us have "collections" far larger than that.:D
If it were pr0n, i'd simply upload the lot to a torrent site and then re-download at a later date... would prolly help the ratios as well ;)

It isnt "mission critical", but more sentimental. Backups do exist, but they are on a mixture of DVDs and CDs, and would be a real PITA to retrieve.
 
Simples! if he back up his stuff, convert.exe will work. If he does't back it up, convert.exe will fail and destroy his only copy of the data. It's always the way.
 
Since this will eventually be spidered by google...

Just tried it out. Mounted the TC volume. cmd window. Convert the volume to NTFS after forcing dismount.

Everything appears intact. Phhhheeeewwwww....
