Worried about my GPU temps

I have had a Sapphire 4850 512MB for a while now and its always been a very noisy card especially in the summer.

Out of interest i downloaded GPU-z yesterday to find that at idle i was hitting temperaatures of 85 degrees! Surely thats not right??

No wonder then fan is always making so much noise. Because of this i was thinking of replacing the cooler on it with something like the vortex neo.

What do you guys think?

If you have used your 4850 for quite a while, I'm thinking may be there's quite a bit of dust built up in your GPU heatsink thus blocking the hot air from being pushed out of your card. I would say try 'clean up' your heatsink first, and if temp is still high after that, then you can try 3rd party GPU cooler.

I don't think 4850 should hit that high at idle...even my older 8800GTS 320MB (now given to my dad) won't reach over 55 when idle.

Have fanspeed is your 4850 running at when idle?

It is running between 4000 - 4500 rpm
If fan is really spinning that fast and temp is still at 80~ at idle, I would have to think may be the GPU cooler hasn't been sat and making contact with the GPU properly. Are you certain that the heatsink is touching the GPU without any gap? And how are the thermal paste spreaded?

i had that problem with my cards heating up and when i look at my graphic card i had a homemade nvidia branded carpet in the fins, after giving it a good clean and reseating the heatsink the temp went down dramatic, so try it out
