Hey, I need to decide if I should stay in University Accommodation for my 1st year, or just stay at home. The reason its only for the 1st year, is because then I will be renting an apartment with friends for the rest of university. But a part of me feels like I could be missing out on a whole year of fun

I live 30mins bus journey away from Belfast, and I plan to go to Queens. If I will be living away from home, I'll go going to Elm's Village.

So what I'm asking all you ex-party animals is; should I stay at home or live in accommodation? The idea of a shared kitchen puts me off slightly incase there's just one person who is completely lazy and doesn't clean up after themselves, or the internet is crippled down to dial-up speed for a couple of months (which would drive me insane). But the thought of getting involved with the university stuff and meeting new people is really tempting.

So whats everyones experiences of living at home or living in accommodation?

EDIT: I can drive for transportation, and I'm applying to Queens for Games Development.

If you are the sort of person who thinks they might miss out on fun by not being in halls, then do it - live in accomodation. It is entirely possibly to have a huge amount of fun and NOT do so, but probably not if you rely on the bus to get into Uni, etc etc.

So live in.

Live in. I know a guy (not the most sociable anyway) who went to Queens, lived at home, did a BA and an MA and has VERY few friends from uni because he never really hung out with people on his course. The QUB Union is a bit pants, so I reckon you'd meet a lot of people in halls who simply wouldn't stay around the uni itself.

Bear in mind as well, Queens has a hell of a lot of country-folk students who go home virtually every weekend to tend the cows/bring in the harvest - so halls might be quiet anyway. At least if you go halls, you won't be thinking 'what if.'

Live in. You'll miss out on a lot if you don't.

When you say you'll be renting with friends 2nd and 3rd year, are these friends you already have? Don't limit yourself just yet, you'll meet new people in first year you may want to live with. And yes... you might end up with someone who doesn't do the washing up or poos in your bed (I'm not speaking from experience...) but that's all part and parcel of the uni experience so live with it:D All makes good stories down the line...

Live in halls. you get to know people a whole lot better if you live amongst them. Plus it's loads of fun.

Live in halls! I made the mistake of staying at home and completely regret it! Go back home in the 2nd year if you have to.

The thing with that is, I plan to do Games Development (for the higher programming degree instead of computer science) and I doubt there will be many people who do it, and those that do I'd imagine won't stay at uni and be the most social of people (im sterotyping here :p which could easily be flipped back onto me!).

I have a car, so I could drive to and from university, bus is probally just the transportation I'd use.

If I was meeting new people, it would be entirely from just people in the Halls or any societies I'd join. So my only real fear is university life being lonly at times :(

I never lived out. I always stayed home but I still had an excellent time and enjoyed myself a lot whilst saving a lot of money on rent.

Me to, but this was partly because I drove so if there was something going down I could be there 12 minutes later. You cant do this on the bus - had I not been able to do this I'd have missed out on so many random 'Lets do XYZ!' sessions.

The OP cant do this, so he should live at Uni.

Here's a previous thread on the issue, most of the points have probably been covered in there. If I had the choice again I'd still choose halls but depending on the type of person you are you may be equally happy to stay at home - that's not something I can advise on.

LIVE OUT

shouldn't the question be shall I live at home (line in) or live OUT?

lol
Live out you'll get a much better chance of smashing more pasty and you'll have a klungetastic time better than a pot noodle and a ****! :)
