To be fair on most games a single 5850 will max games out if u play with Vsync on... never mind 2.. i'd get a 5850 try it and if u want abit more performance buy a second if not.. then you can allways add a second 6 months down the line when there £150 bargins ;)

Under the AA list there is 4 different filters - Box, Narrow Tent, Wide Tent & Edge detect.
when i tried dirt on my brothers 5870, i could only use Box.
anyhigher it would not be so smooth. also in bfc2, when you put the hsao on, it also not as smooth. hence why i thought 2 would do the job.

i know the asus 5850's can use the voltage tweak.
can both the Sapphire 5850, 5870 do the same voltage tweak, or do they have to have the bios updated ?

Cheers.

By the way, using these is pointless for the performance hit compared to the slightly improved AA quality. What you want to do is use plain box sampling of either 4x or 8x, then use the AA quality slider to use either adaptive or super sampling AA.

8x Box SSAA is better than 32x MSAA using Wide Tent.

Going over 8x MSAA is silly compared to using Adaptive or Super Sample.

I Just set his up like this.

AA use application settings
Filter Box

AF application settings.

AI, disabled, standard or advanced, not sure ?

midmap detail lever, highest quality

then super sampling.
seems to run nice and smooth on his dirt game.

that setting ok, or should i use aa 4x af 16 x via CCC ?
I guess the new v2 card will be a lot more dosh...

Cheers.

Use the highest setting that runs smooth :p

For me, I usually run 4x Adaptive AA in everything on two 5770s, SSAA slows down too much on them.

I take it the super sampling gives better quality ?
I'm not to up on the ati CCC, as i've always used nvidia.
I like the look of the Sapphire cards. might get either a 5850 or 5870.
do you know if u can up the voltage via the msi afterburner on the Sapphire card ?

Cheers.

You can on V1 revisions with a black PCB, but not on V2 revisions with a blue PCB.

Out of these two 5870s here:

I believe I read that the 40R supports voltage tweaking, but the 50R doesnt. New Vapor X and Standard Sapphire cards are being made with the new PCB with voltage tweaking removed. If you plan on overclocking, Sapphire isnt a suitable brand, you should get either Asus or MSI cards which support Overvolting, overclocking, plus they have unlocked overclock limits, all of which is covered by the 3 year warranties.

After getting my Sapphire 5770s, I headed to the Sapphire forums to have a read, and they pretty much said 'Sapphire doesnt support overclocking as most of our RMAs are caused by overclocking. Posting overclocking information / advice is not allowed'. Then they took it one step further by removing the voltage tweaking options on their graphics cards.

I found this confusing as I heard many good things about Sapphire before and thought they were the best ATI AIB, also seeing as they had vapor X cards, I dont know why they would be so anti overclocking. Usually though, MSI cards are very rare in the UK, and Asus are usually sold out as everyone goes for them now.

HIS, Club 3D, and Powercolor also use the modified PCBs which removed Voltage tweaking on the HD 5000 cards from looking through their cards on google.

I have seen the Asus V2 5870's else where for sale.
So this was why i was wondering why OC havn't got any in yet.

My brother has the V1 5870, and i been messing around with the setting under CCC. now i understand the ati CCC, and got the right settings.
i must say it's an exellent card.
Maybe they should make the v1 £299, i'm sure there go quicker :D

i dont get it. why did they drop one of the DVI's, then not extend the cooling grill thing?
doesnt make sense to me ... like getting the worst of both (-1 dvi and less efficient cooling)

Waiting for the V2 stock myself, but as they just got a shipment of V1 cards, it doesn't look likely to happen soon!

They dont look as nice, but the V2 coolers are much much better, and the Asus V2s support voltage tweak unlike the Sapphire ones.
