98'c on Q6600, at stock!

I could bet you a tenner that the one of the 4 push down clips have either broken or are not all the way down.

Take the cooler off make sure they look ok and push them down till they click. I would think about buying a better cooler for this chip anway.

Had a similar issue with my reference Intel cooler as well.

Basically, my PC kept rebooting. Checked temps to find them way too high.

Taking the heatsink off and remounting solved the issue for me.

right, just got back from home with AS5 in hand. Im doing a blend test atm and my room is BOILING due to the hot weather. Its on its 3rd test and hasnt pushed anywhere as high yet. Its at 77'c as I type this. Last test at this point was pushing 90'c.

Low temp has dropped by 4-5'c too.

High temp just capped at 78'c and seems to have gone down to 74'c now...so this is already sounding better.

All I did was remove and cleanup my CPU and HSF of all previous paste, washed the top CAREFULLY with cleaner and the HSF too. Cleaned out the HSF of all dust, applied AS5 and replaced all as before.

What is the max temp I should accept from this chip btw? Remember my CPU is at stock btw.

Thanks for everyones help btw.

(as I type this, core0 just hot over 80'c on the 5th test, but was at 74'c for ages.)

just spoken to the old man and he suggests getting 4 new high CFM fans (80mms) first and then maybe getting a new HSF. That is about £80 (£10x4 for fans and £40ish for new HSF).

I said I wanted to get a new case, I was looking at the Coolermaster CM-690 II Advanced with 3 x 120mm (that come with it) and a new HSF.

What you guys think?

Better heatsink first. Case will be better and quieter with 120mm instead of 80mm high cfm fans, sounds like those could be screamers.

Agreed any cooler is gonna be better then the stock one, even the £30 titan and the like, heck even the artic cooling freezer is better.

Tell the old man its pointless spending £40 on those small fans they will be loud compared to 120mm ones.

For the time being I would just get a new HSF. You can get a decent one for less than £20 in MM.

Edit: I just realised you don't have access to Member's Market, but I'm sure you can get a decent second-hand HSF for around £20.

You say you're testing at stock but just thought i'd ask if your vcore is set correctly.

What should my Vcore be? It does change when my CPU goes from 1.6GHz to 2.4GHz (which I didnt know it actually did until just now).

At 1.6GHZ CPU-Z reports as 1.12V, at 2.4Ghz reports at 1.232V and every now and then goes higher too 1.24V.

Yes it will change vcore depending on frequency. Sounds like your VID is 1.2375v as those vcore figures match the 3 Q6600s i've had with that VID.

I must ask, what is a VID? I only used to know about vcores really back in my Barton days. Is my VID ok then and nothing to worry about?

The VID is the "stock" vCore for each chip, and it varies from chip to chip based on Intel's testing procedures. The VID will tell the motherboard: "This is the voltage I require at stock speeds when the VCore setting is on 'Auto' for proper operation." Nothing more. It is said that a lower VID value will yield better overclocks, but nothing's been conclusively proven.

If you have a VID of 0.1 but still get 98c temperatures I would be very worried (unless you run at something like 6ghz)

Ok I am actually guna order a new HSF this week, my temp at the moment is 45'c with just music playing and firefox open. I just dont get this. :(

If I was to set a budget of around £40, what would you recommend? If there is something for about £20 you think is great, please link it, if you think spending £40 on a HS and £15 on a 120mm fan is better, then say it. Its got to the point now where I just want some good cooling on my CPU before it dies on me!

45c idle is fine, not for stock though. Mine idles at about that but has 1.55v going through it @3.6ghz

If you want ease of use get something like a corsair H50, it comes with a fan. I have read that the Venemous X is a great heatsink but is pretty beefy and i imagine a pain in the balls to install

I was looking at the H50 but I dont know if it will go in my PC really... I only have a tiny Lian Li PC65 case.

I have been trying to work out safe temps for my CPU. All the temps given in this thread have been Core0 temps unless otherwise stated. However, I have been reading via google searches that the CPU temp and Core temps can be very different. I was also reading about the TJMax temp too, and how it is either 90, 95 or 100 on a G0 Q6600.

Its kind of confusing, so can anyone explain safe temps for CPU and Core temps, and which one I need to watch?

Also Core Temp only reports core temps (clue is in the name I know) but what is a good reliable application to use for CPU temps?

Above was taken today. I cleaned up the case a little but in fairness its not that much different from before. I took one HDD out as I didnt really need it that much.

Is there anything I can do to improve airflow more? The question mark on there is because I lost a lot of the PCI blanks and I dont know if thats having an effect?
