I'm having difficulty finding a car stereo that doesn't look like a 1980s disco.

The cd player in my mx5 has for a while now been down the pan and I've decided to replace it. It doesn't have to be fancy spec, mp3 player input would be nice (via usb-key or reading small external hard drives via cable round the back is an important bonus but could do without), I'd just like a simple looking interface - preferably as few buttons as possible, one line text (if possible none!) below/above the cd slot. They've just all got so many buttons/colours/displays these days.

Pioneer do some neat looking decks, and the Alpine MP3 only jobbies are pretty smooth, if a bit chunky.

Pioneer did do one model a few years ago that was very popular on here, looked very neat and old school. Amazingly I can't remember the model but I'm sure someone here will pipe up with it.

EDIT: Might of been this one, google found it but unfortunately no visible model number :(.

Also, you want NO lines of text? How do you intend to use it lol?

That's one thing I don't like about the one I bought from you, it's really damn bright, wish you could dim the display at night
 
bledd search for the manual for it, there are 'hidden' menu options sometimes for makers such as JVC that allow you access to things like brightness.

Play, next, stop, rewind/fast forward doesn't really require text does it? I don't use the radio if thats what you're thinking.

I had one of the Pioneer items above - it was an awesome stereo, and I'd buy another if I ever needed a single DIN unit.
 
Budget? If you can pick up a Becker Mexico Pro from Ebay, they're very understated with incredible sound quality.

Simple in terms of its OE looks and adjustments.

I've had the same problem recently and ended up getting a second hand clarion off ebay that's fairly inoffensive.

You'll have fun skipping through hundreds of folders etc. to get to that one MP3 you want then :p. Or what if you want a specific track even on a normal cd, a screen would certainly be easier!

More like it :D. I'll stick with my Pioneer recommendation, having had 2 different units across 3 cars they've been absolutely top notch for me.

Whats wrong with the one you've posted then, its under £100.
 
This is the model I got for my MX5, it was the tightest profile face I could find and I also didn't want something that was going to stand out. It looks nice and not out of place in the dash, but you still have to watch your hand at times when moving the shifter.

The detachable face is also nice when leaving the top down.

3200UB for latest Pioneer for 100 quid, I paid 102 for mine and it's bob on for that price! Matches my Golf MK4 (with it's red buttons) perfectly too.

Cracking unit. Well worth a punt if you can find one second hand.
